Like most things Lego does, I much prefer the simple approach of the old molds. There's a ton of character involved, plus that they actually have studs to give them the extra oopmh as Lego parts.
Not to say the new animals are bad, they're very charming. But I miss the dead eye look of the past

Toys are a bad investment. You're risking your money betting on it appreciating in value. Without intense research, it's a crap shoot. You're also taking on the risk of it becoming damaged while you're in possession of it.
There's the issue of shelf space. If you don't have the space to have a built lego vehicle, you shouldn't make a habit of speculating on boxes. There are ways to invest your money without hogging closet space.

What you don't mention is that rarely if ever do the sets depreciate. You're going to make your investment back in a worst case scenario. You also didn't mention that basically every Lego set has appreciated at least a little bit after retirement with few if any exceptions.

I like Lego animal pieces up to about the size of a horse. Anything bigger than that should be made of separate pieces that are no more than roughly that size. I have vague memories of that old dinosaurs line, so maybe something like that (I can't remember how big they were).

And classic animals are better than modern ones. The more realistic something looks, the more jarring the limitations of the medium are. Lego will always be somewhat abstract, and the older designs worked better in that regard for me.

Sets from that era are actually better to buy used. At least you know what you're getting. I've paid a premium for lord of the rings sealed sets that bust as I put them together and it's frustrating. Luckily, lego customer service was able to replace 90% of what broke.

They will replace any piece that's currently in production so long as you have the instruction manual from the set. They use a code on the back of a manual to verify you have the set.

Problem is, you're usually talking about decade old parts now, so many are non-production molds or colors.

Wouldn't be too hard to make sans the woodgrain tiles, I'm that trainanon and I haven't seen what you are taking about lol I just like the asthetics of a lot of the HS sets.

I am bidding on a sealed high-school set currently never touched the app. I might see if I can find clear printable sticker sheets and see if I can make wood grain stickers.

I like the old moulded ones without prints. A lot of the modern animals have more articulation than the older ones (dinosaurs are a good example of this) which is their biggest advantage.

For $10 it looks like a fun little build, and from what I can see on the box there's some neat building techniques like how the front wheel is assembled. I don't think it's a 10/10 set or any better than the Tuk Tuk, but for the pricepoint it looks fine. Reminds me of the old Model Series in terms of size.

Help me /lg/. I keep buying used lots of Lego from Goodwill when I think its a good deal or has the possibility of containing lots of vintage pieces. I have a huge backlog of unwashed and unsorted Lego. Not to mention the new sets that I buy when they come out because I don't want to miss out on them. How can I reform myself and get ahead of this madness? I haven't built anything in over two months because I feel like all my Lego time needs to be sorting. nobody has an easy answer for you dude. you dug a hole and now you have to make your way out. just don't let yourself buy anything until you've made progress, or 'reward' yourself maybe every two weeks or something if you've made whatever goal you set for yourself. new sets aren't going anywhere like a year, so your FOMO is unfounded, you didn't NEED to buy this years modular right away, you could've waited. I can understand not wanting to miss out on good lots you see online so like I said make progress and allow yourself to buy something here and there to scratch that itch, but remember this also deepens the hole you're in unless you've made significant progress.
if it was me, I'd start by just picking a bag/box and sorting into some general categories. maybe 5 or 6 vague categories that you can later break down into more specific groups for storage/use. it will become easier the more you do it, unfortunately you just have to not be a bitch and just do it. after a while you will have it at least somewhat sorted, then you will just go from there and sort group A down into smaller categories, store it, then move on to the next, etc. you'll have time for building later and it'll be much much easier to do so because things will be sorted. it's gonna take time and a lot of storage, but you'll get through it. literally just do it, you made the problem now fix it.

Agreed with what this anon says. I would buy all the used stuff I could find at thrift stores, yard sales, etc I could find just to find it getting very unmanagable. And the backlog of NIB sets I had was taking up valuable buiding space too. I finally got control of the situation a few years back and bought about 20 of those Akron shelving units and a ton of Sterilite containers. HOWEVER this pasy year a friend works at a major used toy sorting facility in the next town over and has started dropping off bags (Think of the bags comfortor sets come in) off every few weeks. I dump these into huge Walmart tubs and am up to about 5 or 6 now. I don't build or sort much in the summer (WinterBuilder) but I do collect and buy all year long. It's a never-ending cycle but it makes me happy. Just find time to sort but constantly build. Bricks go faster when building larger projects. Most important: Remember to enjoy your journey. Been buildig since the 3 digit sets in the late 70's. Don't plan on stoppig either.

Thanks for the encouragement anons. I definitely have a system for sorting. I have a total of 10 akron mills drawer cabines for the more common parts, a series of wooden drawers for really common bagged parts, and everything that doesn't fit into one of those is mostly sorted by color in big bags in that big plastic tote bin on the floor. Once the Lego is washed and dried I fill it into 1 or 2 gallon ziplock bags. Then I pour out piles on the table and sort by part. The thing that really slows me down is I find sets that are almost complete in these used lots so I try to piece them together. Therefore I have to compare the piles of sorted Lego on my table to my numerous watch lists on Bricklink. Once I pull all the parts that are needed for sets on the watch lists, then it gets sorted into the proper drawers by part type. I have a bunch of old sets I am trying to complete right now and I refuse to place any bricklink orders because I don't want to order a part that is already sitting in one of these unsorted bags or boxes.

My girlfriend bought me the Home Alone set for my birthday a few days ago... But Amazon must have dropped the box because one corner is bent. I plan on actually taking this one out and building it around Christmas time, but should I care if the box is slightly bent on one corner? I could be anal and return it for a different one but that seems unnecessary.

That's something I love about Star Wars that people just ignore. It's part western, part samurai, part Merlin and the Knights of the Roundtable, part WW1 or WW2 dogfighting, part naval warfare. It just has a sci-fi coating to all these classic themes so I love Star Wars sets with things to ride on, things to siege, and mechanical machines that you "build". I'd love to see more sets that revolve around villain vs hero bases or fortifications.

Was it on bricklink or ebay? With ebay that is my experience about 80% of the time: tons of missing or incorrect pieces. If the listing advertised the set as complete I message the seller with a complete list of the missing parts with part #s and descriptions from Bricklink and ask them if they have the missing pieces and can send them to me. It usually overwhelms them and they're like "oh shit, this guy really knows a lot about Lego" and if they don't have the pieces they offer to refund me a percentage of the sale price. This usually works out well, especially if the pieces are common and easily found in my collection. Except for one time this older jew lady in Commiefornia refused to give me a refund on a set she advertised as 99% complete when it was like 65% complete. She tried claiming she was selling for someone else. I hounded her until she gave me about half of the money I wanted back and then I still left her a bad feedback. A set with a lot of mistakes usually doesn't happen on bricklink and if it does, the seller has always corrected it for me. I don't buy as many sets on bricklink though. However I have noticed an overall shittyness in my bricklink orders lately, from missing pieces to dirty pieces. I think people don't care as much about anything in general anymore.

On ebay, you take a gamble based on pictures and description, bricklink is generally more expensive because it's a hobbyist community where the seller is expected to be more accountable.

At the same time, nobody on bricklink wants to list vintage parts and used sets anymore because they're almost all dirty, have imperfections and take a lot of time to sort and store, as opposed to just buying 20 sets of something on clearance that auto parts out to 2-3x the value.

Completing vintage sets is a nightmare now, especially right around the early 2000s era when Lego wasn't producing much, whilst at the same time making a bunch of specialty stuff that was short lived. Bricklink used to be a treasure trove of old stuff, but it's been so picked over, especially the last 2 years.

Nexo Knights wave 1 was AMAZING, clays rumble blade was an awesome vehicle and the main cab came off and looked like a lego sword., similar to some of the others too.
Nexo was fucked in wave 2 by choosing grey and purple, everything looked boring and same that it flopped. A shame because wave had some neat sets.

But we are talking about true lego castle. Midieval style. And I really hope lego is taking notes as of late. With the ideas blacksmith, I really want to know how well the 3 in 1 castle sold, as i have a hunch it was one of the best sellers of the line leading to lots of people buying 3 of them just for the alt builds and mocs. Just the blue falcons minifigures have sold insanely well, people making armies with them. Even the bricklink forest castle sold out in minutes. And with the new 90th castle on the horizon with 20 minifigs in one set, hot damn does it look bright for the future of medieval lego.

I have an old set that I took these rooks from, though I’ve only ever used these guys in a battle, maybe eventually I’ll have cause to use the whole set here.
