Okay, serious talk: it's one of those "works if you close your eyes" connections.
You CAN press it flush but the parts will be under slight stress due to the stud on the side of the bracket being an EXTREMELY teeny tiny bit (like a μm or something) off-center.
But of course LDD doesn't give a shit about this so you can also pull off stuff like pic-related without issues or error messages:

Longneck from horizon zero dawn. There's a piece you put on after that forces it to be flush but it's clearly heavily stressing the piece, as you can tell by before that piece goes on. In a CAD program it doesnt demonstrate that so its another example of them not noticing this illegal technique in a physical build

I'm not the OP but I ran into the same thing building this set. It doesn't happen on the righthand side because the lower four-stud piece goes on first there, and it forces the piece to be flush. In both cases however its stressing the piece, you just might not notice with the righthand side because the piece being stressed goes on last

And even when saved and reloaded it doesn't recognize it as error like, say, a 1 pin wide bushing tube attached to a stud where you can somehow put a pin in afterwards which will get deleted when reloaded.
Not to mention shit like the fucking tentacles on the Gargantos set that even clip through the eyelid piece in the instructions and don't get flagged as error, either.
