It was the writer, Ellis, that said that. The director is apparently really cool and has actually written several play-through and game guides from many off the games. He kept trying to gently get the writer to listen but doesn't seem like it took.

Or did you forget deluxes are 23, and voyagers are 30?
Even if you use the old pricing of 20 and 28, it's still 88, more expensive than the individuals.

Not super impressed with the QC on Laser Optimus Prime.
He's solid enough, but I had about six pieces pop off during transformation (he comes in truck mode, though slightly mistransformed so the instructions aren't exact)
His arms in particular kept coming off the mushroom pegs.

Good toy overall, and he didn't break irreversibly, it's just things like loose tabs in certain places, but it's something to be aware of.

Really though, for a free shelf, you're making good use of it. My only nitpick would be to move things around so you can have like lines together. The maximals and jetfire block being so far away from their series mates is a little sucky.

I agree, I'll probably move them around. I also think I'll get some risers too so I can fit more per block. The Armada ones are kind of squeezed in. I could even get another single row kallax to add on if I need to. As for their alt modes I might mix it up a bit from time to time. This was going to have other collection pieces too outside of Transformers, but they already take up so much of it I may just dedicate it to Transformers.

would Hasbro’s current crop of designers be able to pull of a modern, full sized, Leo-Kaiser-style kibble-less combiner?

None of the recent examples of that approach have been great, but arguably all of those were also being hamstrung by additional constraints:

-FOC Bruticus was made during an era of severe plastic-budget cuts, and pretty much every figure in the line ended up feeling a bit anemic as a result, even the ones who weren’t also trying to be a combiner on top everything.

-Gen Centuritron was a mincon 3-pack, combining both the difficulty of making a good looking 3-member combiner, with the budget and size constraints a being a single deluxe-scale figure.

-And the RID 2015 Gestalt combiners were all Warrior scale torsos with legends scaled limbs. Also if memory serves, the limbs also had that “crash-combiners” activators-style gimmick, resulting in all of them being bricks in all 3 modes.

(RotF Legends Devastator and the more recent Studio Series full scale version were both pretty well received, though both are pretty atypical examples due to the non-humanoid members and combined modes.)

You know what TF is lacking? Vehicle combiners. We have plenty of teams that combine into a big robot, but there's only like one or two that combine into a big vehicle of some sort. It seems a bit of a shame.

It's a pretty good set desu, if they were released at the normal price of two deluxes and a leader at the time as opposed to Takara's price I'd recommend it to anyone. Dai Atlas is the weakest part though.

Weird. Looking at that strange comic which seemed to have spoiler Legacy Knockout, Override seems to be based on the original toy in design, just with less details to be easier to draw and color. I wonder if Leadfoot was just a lucky guess from looking at Mirage having a similar altmode, which would presumably also have Road Rocket and Minerva based on Arcee and Elita-1's toys. Also Thunderblast looks extremely different between issues three and four. I guess she had reconstructive surgery in between issues instead of just bouncing back from getting run over repeatedly like Ransack and Crumplezone.

The comic guys only had a whatever rough designs they could get for the characters. It's why colors aren't 100% accurate and why they didn't have Override's toy (because they weren't sent anything at the time they were drawing it, so they reused her old toy). This is also the reason why Road Rocket used the old G2 design in the first issue, then had the Legacy version added later.

Transformers Power Core Combiner Double Clutch and the Rallybots

Weeks back I referred to Skyburst and the aerialbots as the second worst set.
These guys are the worst.

I can wholeheartedly say this is as good as these toys look.
A weird boxy blue muscle car, two boring blue and black cars, a red racecar, and a cute orange car.
The most you can say is that he has some pale silver flames.

Just boring.

Look at this dumpy dumbass.

Lok at his enormous backpack.

On top of not having a very nice body, or very nice colours, Double Clutch doesn't have very good articulation either.
The ball joint shoulders hit against the bumper chest when you try to move the arms forward.
That goes for the double elbows too.

The ball hips are molded in a way to prevent pretty much all movement.
Thigh and neck swivels work good though.

I'm not even sure what they were going for with this torso.

I'm not 100% sure exactly how the arms transform. So mine are stuck sticking slightly backwards.
The shoulders have some movement on both axis and Double Clutch still has hips and knees.
In fact, the hips work better now because they've been replaced by the small mode's thigh swivels.

It is really interesting how the sub-names listed are. Some seem to be the English name like Jetfire, Hot Shot, and Sideways, some are names that didn't get used for the final one like Speedracer, Trailbreaker, and Smokescreen, some are the Beast Wars guy they share the altmode of, some seem off the wall like Adams (Cosmos's Japanese name) for Reverb, or ジョージ (George?) for Ransack. The limited edition Sky-Lynx color Scourge and Minerva color Thunderblast seem to be references to in-development names!

I don't care how any of these are designed but after they did the bad-cgi thing with Beast Wars MPs and pivoted towards remaking the MPs with a cartoon model, I'm kinda hooked. I could give a fuck about G1 aside from a few characters but this is maybe one of the first I can tell isn't a full on panel-former. Hopefully not a ton of scratching issues either.

Also this thing has to be like a billion dollars if he is the size he presents in the Starscream comparison.
