Cyclonus having a tab that spins his propeller was genius. My only issue with the armada line aside from pose ability is that you need to use minicons to fire their projectiles. It makes it awkward and less fun than just clicking a tab, minicons should've been for just exposing stuff.

my current TF shelves are limited so I only have the main beast wars cast up, plus the BW-adjacent kingdom guys. Dinobot's on my desk because he's getting some new paint soon. I'm surprised there isn't a 3rd party better sword for him. I mean they have this big weird spiral sword, but no simply 'approximately the sword they gave you except longer and with a real point'

I'm concerned whatever high I get from buying stuff will wear off or my obsessiveness with Transformers will die down again and I'll regret more than I anticipated. It's not like I couldn't just sell stuff I don't want anymore, but there's no telling how long that could take. I'm already having a hard time selling some old stuff on eBay and I've lowered some of their prices below the average.

I'm gonna use some tan-yellow, possibly mixed with some bronze if it's too bright. Dinobot's skin color is a little vague, it's maybe a tidbit mauve?

Black Zarak's base mode is juuuuuust the right size to fit in my shelf and provide some elevation. Thougu I had to bench a few guys to make room.

Literally Scorponok piloting a new body. In the original fiction, he makes a smaller (bigger than combiner, but not city sized body) after his Mega Zarak transtector is destroyed, but is then brainwashed to serve Devil Z. Once Devil Z is killed, he slips away and goes on to create more bodies. The last set of Select comics for Japan were heavily hinting at Black Zarak being a major big bad, but the line ending so early probably meant those plans were scrapped.

That's fair. I personally dislike Kup so he won't be in my collection. Although Wreck as a figure is one of the best mainline figures Hasbro has produced. A LOT of care went into this mold and it shows. Very happy with him.

Transformers Generations Titans Return Highbrow

I've really hit upon a vein of TR deluxe, specifically blue ones.

Highbrow turns in a thiccly helipcopter. Far wider than his two punt rotor's could hope to lift.
From the front he looks cool. The way the cockpit and intakes come together is pretty badass. The red windshield being the cherry on top.

Maybe it's only strange to me but something about the landing gear being attached to the guns seems funny.

I'm not wrong in thinking that Highbrow is the forgotten unloved child of the original Headmasters, am I?

In any case this toy feels awful phoned in.
He tries to copy Scourge's spine collapse trick, but instead of using the cockpit space for it Highbrow just wears his whole cockpit on his back.
Arms don't transform at all. So there's just untouched wings and rotors sticking out all over.

Articulation is whatever, standard stuff for these TR deluxes. No waist but I feel like one should have been doable.
Neck joint is super tight for some reason which doesn't help the fact that the head connector is way more loose that on the other TR toys so far.
Also his hip assembly drops two millimeters out of place when you pick him up.

Okay so I made this shite little tfp ultra Magnus digibash last thread cus I was bored but like, can anyone here figure out a way to turn the nose of the G2 laser prime truck into magnus’s shoulder pylons?

I thought you could maybe fold in the wheels and fenders into where the missile bits would go and fold up a little curved but to replicate the top of the tfp’s shoulders but I realise that’s dumb now and wouldn’t work

Apparently one of the Hasbro product designers posted somewhere that their test shot came back with a sticker sheet that was messed up, they ended up having to use it for product photos and they had to rush to just barely manage to get it fixed in time for production

So I've started picking up some figs after clearing my collection a few years ago. I've got a core class Soundwave and Draculus, with Lego Prime ready to be built. I'm thinking about going after more core class stuff, C.O.M.B.A.T. system Micromasters and Battle Masters, Fossilizers, and I'd like to track down everyone from Studio Series 86 since I really do like the movie.
Who hasn't had a SS86 release but has had an "equivalent" release? WFCK Galvatron and Cyclonus look fairly close to what I'd expect. Not sure which Blaster and Soundwave I'd want to get in the event they don't receive SS86 treatment.

Well, lets see.
There's Earthrise's Quintesson and Allicon, naturally.
For Galvatron, the Legacy repack is a better alternative since it doesn't have battle damage.
Kingdom Cyclonus has a tendency to yellow at the joints, I'd wait to see if the upcoming Selects version is better. It's based on the toy, so the color scheme isn't quite movie accurate, but the darker purple does more closely resemble seaso 3 Cyclonus.
Kingdom/Legacy Blaster is fine.
For Soundwave, the ideal would be the Netflix version but you'll have to pay insane scalper prices for it. There's always the clean Legacy repack of the Siege, but it's no really movie accurate unless you don't mind him turning into a flying box.
Then there's Springer from Siege, who just about looks right but has that ugly battle damage. The alternative is Amazon's Wrecker Springer, but he's based on toy/Marvel comic colors.
And just for giggles, there's Earthrise's dead Prime.

Takara hasn't existed since the merger.
Tomy has become less interested in TF as time goes on. They barely phone it in now. Starting with Raiden over Devastator makes me think they don't care if TF tanks in Japan. They've been letting Hasbro handle the brand for the most part since POTP came out. Beyond the 10 or less new molds they make for Japan, TF is mostly shifted to the American side of things. Takara would make whole lines not even caring if Hasbro imported the toys over, now Hasbro makes 99% of it & Tomy slaps a sticker on the box when they import to Japan.

More likely they'll just use the whole stunticons for the rest of the lineup to go with Motormaster clash (the only one that's even remotely confirmed a possibility).
They'll want to reuse those stunticon molds somehow and the only other immediately obvious option would be G2 colors.

Man, if my budget this months was all Capcom Games and Games Workshop I would be all over that.

I still think there should be a follow-up to that with Ian Malcolm themed JP Jeep based on one of the Hound or BumbleBee moulds and a pair of Fembot redesigns of Dinobot, so you can finally ambush JP, whilst having Tyrannocon chase the other guy.

Got masterpiece Nightbird in.
Biggest annoyance right out of the gate, the joint for the top of her head is completely stuck and won't come down. Luckily I finally bothered to order some shock oil at the same time as I did her, it should get here tomorrow and hopefully that'll help fix it.
Getting the kibble into place was as annoying as people say, getting accessories into her hands is also annoying, and her leg articulation is weirdly limited.
Other than that she looks cool, paint qc's pretty perfect, can't complain that much.

I assume they were going to retool him from Sunstreaker. They share a similar transformation.
But I'm glad they didn't do it. Lockdown deserves his own mold. Between RotF/IDW and Cyberverse he has two evergreen designs to base it on.

What 84-86 guy do you propose that Cannonball is a retool of? Ratchet is the medic of the group, but his vehicle mode doesn't look correct to either Cannonball and Robot mode is goofy. Trailbreaker is a bit closer, but has an even worse robot mode for a pirate.

What would the most manufactured to be popular character be like? Focus the mass in the hips, thighs, lower arms (as sleeves, keep hands dainty) and as articulated back wings instead of giant chunks. I suppose the chest and breasts as well, but those are harder to excuse to shareholders/age rating folk.

I actually like a lot of the BWN figs(Break sucks though sorry), and don't necessarily mind a certain amount of shellforming as long as the kibble at least looks cool, which guys like Big Convoy definitely manage. Still don't know if I'd say they're really well designed figures, but they're interesting and charming imo. She is an easy way to get the quota of girl characters covered. Like in the live-action movies they already did both car and jet Shatter and Alice is "lol" tier. She's the only female character of note in 86. Arcee is popular in Prime, even if she got strange looking in her process of being moved to G1 universe. Can't justify Earthrise Arcee's actual design, but definitely is filling the "girl" niche there as well.

Transformers Universe Galvatron

Ending the week on a high note
Universe Galvatron has the most classicly Galvatron of alt modes; an entirely grey tank. With a couple spots of silver to zazz it up.

As a tank toy it ain't too bad, various vents and hatches all over for visual interest. No gaps at all, which is more than a lot of tankformers can say.
A wee rocket pack hanging off the turret pleases me.
The overly large slightly bulbous cannon is very Galvatron-y.

He doesn't roll worth a damn. Turret goes side to side but no up and down, but I think that may be accurate to this sort of tank

Transformation certainly has some uniqueness to it. Much easier if you just pop the turret arm off and transform it separately. Now that I'm looking at him I see that besides the pale orange used to join his limbs, there are also some clear plastic hinges holding a few panels on. So that's scary.

Much more Galvatron-y purple in robot mode, but still majority grey.
Asymmetrical transformation gives you asymmetrical hands. I've always really liked the open claw hand. It's just not something you get to see very often.

I don't understand how you're popping all the limbs off. The ball in the left shoulder is weak, yeah, and the right can be pulled off, but there aren't any balls in the legs. It's all pinned in place.
And I've never seen the backpack come apart.

Actually when I pulled him out of the tub his cannon had popped loose and was barely hanging on to the ball socket shaped groove just behind the true socket
I was momentarily very confused and worried.

It's no secret this was a downscaling of a voyager sized toy, right? was that ever officially officially confirmed?

I am really really not liking how limited this dude's big arm is.
The shoulder only rotates. No up and down or in and out.
The other shoulder is on a ball socket and hinge so it can go all over.
Bother can rotate at a bicep, one elbow bends 90, the other bends 180.

Head can look around on a ball joint and Galvatron's eyes a piped with a very bright orange plastic.
Waist swivels, haven't seen that in a few days.
His hips are on universal joints. The point at the pin is pretty tight but the joint that plugs into the body was loose enough that I needed to give it a drop of floor polish.
Knees are present and work, not helpful however since Galvatron's shins are six times longer than his thighs.
And I suppose he technically does have ankles

I think in a interview yes. he was originally supposed to be a mega class but got downgraded because there were a lot of big tank tf's at the time. he was also supposed to have a tank walker mode that still has some vegetal parts in the final toy/

man, when you look at these two, you realize they had to completely reengineer the arms when they downsized. The original concept had his turret splitting in two, to become his arms, with the front feet of the walking tank becoming the shoulder tank treads and pylons from G1 galvatron.
For the Deluxe, those don't have the proper joints anymore to do that mode apparently, nor would it really work because one arm is now giant.
Looking at several of the details, it really feels like they HEAVILY referenced the original, but most of it got scrapped.

the issue with making it into the female figure is the lack of hips.
Because of the fenders, she's all thigh, no hips.
I'd suggest flipping the front of the car hood down (so it sits on her rear, pointing up) and cutting the hip line all the way to the edge of the car where the front wheels are.
That way, she gets a shapely hip, and the legs only need to flip out the lower portion rather than moving around and all that.
It'll give her a real hourglass look.
also I'd make the forarms significantly thicker. Probably twice as thick. Right now it looks like she's got really buff shoulders, so filling out the forarms should make it look less so.

Depends on how far the actual shoulder joints are from the center of the body. Thin shoulders with big shoulder pads may be the same thickness as wide shoulders, but they’ll move differently.

Similar kind of discussion regarding shoulder height. Remember the Kingdom Galvatron had misassembled shoulders that made him look terrible because they were too low?

a robot has little choice with regards to body parts that have flexible connectors on a living creature. hips are usually #1 with a bullet in that regard. that's why most animalformers have their limbs just sitting on the outside of the box that is the torso, otherwise the knees would keep hitting the ribs.
I really don't think you can give a robot literally big hips. Wide hips, sure, but the hips in the end have to basically be a thing the thighs attach to. unless you just want this big ugly hinge that restricts the hell out of leg movement.

If you have a large shoulder piece and the biceps part attaches very close to the body, and very close to the other shoulder piece, you have something into which a narrow-shouldered human could fit, were it hollow. Yeah, but it's not necessary for him. Even Japan's release tells you to not use it since you don't need to and it might damage the paint on the back of the head.

I always liked how the entire turret transformed into the arm and cannon, rather than the typical "take cannon off vehicle and attach on arm." Execution was shit, but it was a neat idea.

think about trying to manipulate things along 3 axes with only a single pointer, and a pointer only aligned on a 2d plane so you have to rotate the other one manually.
3d modeling is going to explode once we have a better method of manipulating polygons, ideally with our fingers directly.

He looks cool as fuck, but I didn't know what series he came from. Apparently he's from the Japanese series which makes sense, their designs are pretty great.

Honestly JP 94 doesn't have much value for me outside of his vehicle mode, could be worth seeing if there's a similiarly scaled model of it out there that you could use instead. Tyrannocon Rex is definitely the stand out star of the set for me.

Wish this set was better, I basically skipped it on principle since I hated all that rubber on Megatron (plus all the breakages I keep hearing about) and the stupid clear plastic feet on JP.

the tour vehicles were ford explorers, but the park had Jeep Wranglers as well. I guess they went with the Ford because its more iconic to the T-rex scene than the actual Jeep the rex chases later

If they wanted to lose a bunch more money, I guess. I think that the T-rex box sold really, really poorly, I can't imagine a less iconic vehicle/scene would sell any better, even if it was cheaper.

That wasn't the only reason, charging like 34 dollars extra was one issue, but they also didn't bother changing the T-Rex that much, it also needed a new dino head and they didn't deliver.

eh the shape is right, if anything megatron is the one who needed a new dino head
but in both cases the dino head is too small and legs are slightly too big. this affects both modes. no big deal but I did notice it.
