Slugslinger arrived today, never really understood why he's got two nosecones other than an attempt to invoke the Rule of Cool. I'm not a big fan of the design but given his rarity I figured $40 was worth indulging my FOMO. Now to wait patiently and keep looking for Misfire.

Spoiler was because it had some lines from the show, but UM also hinted at this death via the way the gray is shown on the toy. The Playdo was meant to bring up how the show had characters trying to find energy sources and the cubes were inside it because they were supposed to be energy being found in grime or gunk somewhere.

Transformers PowerCore Combiners Steamhammer w/ Constructicons

This is an alright set, in the back half of the line when they sort of had is figured out.

What's different between this team and the PCC Dinobots is that the Constructicons are only mostly different from the main team.
There's a steam roller (which I'd love to see a real Transformer use as an alt mode sometime), a hole drilling auger thing, an orange asphalt spreader thing, and a snowplow.
With only Steamhammer himself stepping on the toes of the main Constructions by being a bulldozer.

They're an alright little group, visually interesting enough individually. What you see is what you get.
Decent weathering on the blades and drum.

Unique little robot mode for Steamhammer.
Starting with one of the lesser features; his little pug like face. He's got the concave nose and little ears of one.
Balanced out by the strong lower jaw, it works. In a way most of the regular Concructicons, with their visors and mouth plates, wouldn't understand.

Second thing are his under slung claws. They're probably the first thing about this toy one might notice, and definitely a unique feature.
Next this the enormous backpack made out of the whole blade of the bulldozer and some of the tread. I'm going to use imagination to say this is a jumppack.

Lastly are his little tread booties.

Man, PCC feels like such wasted potential. The main bots were generally decent at worst, and the focus on minicons was cool, but man are those limb drones just not good. They didn't need robot modes, but they should have at least transformed into functional limbs instead of vague limb-like structures without a hint of articulation.

I get what they were going for with the limbs but it's one of those ideas that only works on paper. It evokes a concept art they had from RotF where Devastator is forming and a helicopter (yes really) flies to where the shoulder is and an abomination of an arm erupts from the chopper. It's a dynamic visual, but after that you're left with garbage.

Steamhammer pulls a trick that a few PCC use.
Tat being flipping his backpack over his head to be his new torso.
The height of the shoulders turns out very like this. Not too high or too low.

His face is the same featureless T that Leadfoot has but the helmet is very different.
He look like the sort of mass produced brute a villain in the early 00s would use.

Inspired by that anon who did a mini review of Web Diver Galleon a couple threads back, I've decided to do a similar mini review of a Non-Transformer pirate bot that I own.

This is Captain Jack from the Tobot V Mini line. Tobot Mini are essentially smaller versions of the larger Tobot V toys with less paint apps and no gimmicks. Funnily enough, Captain Jack's mini actually has more articulation than the larger version, as the bigger one doesn't have shoulder articulation while the mini has balljoints which give his shoulders full range of movement.

Captain Jack's vehicle mode, a sleek sports car. A nice subtle touch is the small fin on the roof, which is part of the shark motif. This is a bit more obvious in the larger version, where the fin is painted.

I think the biggest problem with Legacy is that they need to stop doing legacy toys. You will inevitably come up against previous iterations that have nostalgia on their side. Their flaws are charming or "of their time"; Legacy flaws are due to general incompetence or cost cutting, if they are actual flaws and not just nitpicks. In some cases, the older toys are significantly better than their "improved" counterparts. It's a losing battle and it will get worse the more they return to the well.

It's a simple design, a new one just needs to add a few extra bits of articulation. You wouldn't even need to do the original head transformation since you can just store it in the backpack due to a new toy not needing the electronics so a new toy would have an even easier transformation and lower parts count.

I think part of the problem is that the original was already so close to being perfect. All you really gotta do for an improved update is change where the head is stored in truck mode (there are multiple good options for that), and add a few extra bits of modern articulation. Oh, and make sure the parts are laid out on the sprues in a way that gets the colors right. That's it! Anything beyond that is just icing on the cake. As for why Hasbro doesn't do this? I don't know, maybe they're worried if it isn't significantly different enough, people who already own the original won't feel the need to get the new one? But either way, this new version really suffers from all the corners they had to cut to save costs by having it be a partial remold, which probably prevented it from being a direct update, even from the conceptual stage.

I had a lot of trouble getting the hue just right. it's a reallly tough color to nail down. the first coat is much lighter, then I mixed up a darker mauve-taupe to put on top of it.. tiny bits of the lighter coat show through, but I actually like that. realistic.

I even did the trim on his legs! That took a while and it came out kinda messy, but whatever! I still think the weapons on this toy are undersized.. it's fine. I painted the inside of the rotate blade too.
I think I should have kept the center of the... brownstripe nexus more on the outsides of the arms, but that wouldn't have worked well in raptor mode. I looked up the masterpiece toy as my color guide, it's interesting how many parts of his thighs and knees this toy mimics, but then adds dino skin texture to to make the beast mode more cohesive..

I just don't see the value in what you want. The original toy had a fairly simple transformation with little extraneous kibble that was almost perfectly accurate to the show model. To do what you want would make the engineering needlessly complicated, possibly compromising on its accuracy to the character model and introducing more points of possible failure, just so the chest can be slightly less "fake" than the original toy was. Like why make the transformation more complex with lesser accuracy, for such a minor nitpick?

Transformers Reveal the Shield Optimus Prime

You're not going to believe that it was a coincidence that I pulled this toy today but it was.

This is the only version of this guy that I have. Well I have a bunch of the repaints, but no version of the original and no new one.
So I can't do compare/contrasts.

First thing I have to say about this alt mode is that it doesn't fit together like I want it to. I can't get the four rear wheels to touch the ground.
And the fender bits always point up stlightly. If you can get them where they're supposed the be they'd rub on the wheels.

The red and black look good. The red and blue look good. The way the black smashes into the blue does not.
Is that how the original looked?
I like the implementation of the trailer hitch, even if nothing attaches to it.

I think you don't understand what "basic fundamental underlying premise" means. The basic fundamental underlying premise of TM2 Megatron is "Megatron, but a dragon". The design is "almost entirely red with some yellow, left arm is the dragon's head, dragon tail forms helmet of head, dragon legs are robot legs, wings are made of separated blades and shared between modes". If anon hates the tail helmet thing, then that doesn't mean he hates the underlying premise of the character, as it's but one possible way to execute the concept of the character. But removing the tail helmet would mean it's no longer the same design, it's too major an element, it would be like removing Laser Prime's shoulder pylons. Even the red recolor of Gigatron still follows the same underlying premise TM2 Megatron does, but it's obviously not TM2 Megatron.

Transformation a bit finicky. I've never figured out the trick to sliding the wheels in, just jiggle it til it works.

So much clear plastic in this guy. The eyes, and a couple other spot on his helmet. A plate inside the shoulder pylons for the headlights, grill, and behind the missile whatevers.
The window titties which I'm just now noticing a matrix detail behind. And most curiously a clear plastic insert in his biceps.

I didn't even mean to but I put Prime in the pose that's the biggest flex on the new Optimus. I just wanted to show that you can store the sword on his back.

Love me a transforming weapon.

This Prime has got all sorts of posability.
He's got a separate swivel and hinge for the shoulder movement. Obviously the outward movement is a bit hampered. They only go out to about 45 degrees.
Biceps swivel fine so long as you mind the flaps on the inside of his arms. Elbows bend to almost 90.
The wrists are fantactice, ball jointed and hinged so you can get all kinds of sword poses.
Which I am takin zero advantage of.

Neck is ball jointy and waist is swively.
Ball joint in the hips are fairly unimpeded.
Knees don't work super good because the wheels bump into each other.
Like the wrists the ankles are also both hinged and ball jointed.

Prime's right shoulder had a clear peg that was ruining my day by getting in the way just enough to annoy me.
So I nipped it off.

If you consider every minor difference to make it a different design, then yeah you can say a thousand different designs fit those parameters. But that's being utterly nitpicky. Details of a design have varying levels of importance. The core details make the design, the rest is set dressing. G1 cartoon Optimus Prime, Siege Prime, and even Bumblebee Prime are all essentially the same design, because they share all the main core design features. They have differences that make them distinct from one another, sure, but they're all recognizably different takes on G1 Prime. It's only once you remove those core features are they truly, wholly different from one another. You'd be hard pressed to find someone that hates one of those designs but loves another, unless they suffer from severe autism. And you shouldn't take those kinds of people seriously, they're the same kind of people that cry over Sonic the Hedgehog's eyelids being blue versus tan.

I've always been of the opinion that a new toy based on a specific transformer should at least carryover 3-4 iconic design details. On that Dragon Megatron example, if they changed the position of the tail to either turn that into a weapon or just nixed it entirely, I don't think people will bitch hard about it as long as the head is similar and the rest of the toy is still fairly accurate to the look of the toy and show.

Cause he's right. They wouldn't be making a dragon megatron like anything else but that unless they were going to make RID dragon Megatron, or a new one entirely.
Even the transformers Universe Optimus Primal which had a completely different transformation scheme than the classic, and a very different aesthetic still ended up with most of the same visual design elements.
White and black arms in robot mode. The chest panels and power core. Red accents.

If you don't like a design, you're not going to like various tweaks either.

Hell, look at why so many people hated the live action movies. A lot of the designs were ugly, and just slapping better faces on them wasn't going to fix that.

I super agree. the trouble with those designs though is you have to be paying very close attention, and ideally have a still image to reference (to get you through the shakycam).. If you're the kind of person that doesn't look at fine details but only broad strokes, they will mess you up. because they're basically nothing BUT fine detail.

Yeah what the hell, I thought I was missing something when I first got him. Best way I've figured out is putting the axe handle into the roof port and attaching it that way, you can also wedge the sword into a unused slot on his leg, both methods just look wonky.

Part of the design esthetic of the transmetals was the robotic beast mode and the organic cyborg robot mode.

Megatrons faux rex head chest is organic, and the beast head is robotic, they are also different colors.

I was having a similar idea when I was trying to think up stuff for when the RPG comes out. I was thinking about throwing the players into a Gladiatorial contest full of Street Fighter Expy's, like Tigercide who has a damaged left eye and chestpiece damage, or the final boss M-VEGA, who has bull horns a massive cape and turns into some kind of tank with a giant crushing steamroller on the front.
After that I ran out of ideas, other than have a comically weak called Alpha Danger who keeps challenging Tigercide for killing his father Oya-G.

Hasbro, despite owning D&D Owners Wizards of the Coast, set up their own RPG division with both blackjack and hookers called Renegade Games. They've already done core-books for Power Rangers and GI Joe and the Transformers one was supposed to be released in July or August but we've literally heard nothing so far.

I started collecting again because I'm brainstorming a tabletop strategy game using figures as optional game pieces/making battle reports. Probably going to start with skirmishes based on TFTM for doing the core combat system followed by additional rules for asymmetrical X-COM geoscape grand strategy planning to cover events from seasons 1 and 2. Slugslinger was part of series four of G1, which was (with the exception of the throttlebots) primarily all about futuristic vehicle shit and beast robots alt modes.

IIRC by this point in the G1 line, Hasbro was having to create original molds since they had exhausted their supply of Diaclone molds and their designers wanted very much sci-fi vehicles and plans due to the fact that the cartoon had done a time skip to allow them to deviate from doing then modern day vehicles.

by then, there were a fuckton of aliens that the autobots had interacted with, and monsters, and so Zarak's plan was to basically trick the autobots into thinking they were random monsters/aliens and not decepticon warriors out to kill autobots
But due to Optimus Prime being a program at the time, he hacked the database and stole the data, made their own pretenders, and then pulled the very trick the decepticons had planned back on them first.
Then on top of that, they could use their shells for limited combat decoys, and certain attacks that hurt cybertronians were only partially effective against pretender shells.

Also in the comics, most aliens were humanoid and cybertronian sized
it was earthlings and nebulans that were wierd

As cool as he is, Slicer feels like a wasted slot in the SG line. He could’ve easily been released as Selects, since he doesn’t even have a SG symbol. There are many characters with decos exclusive to SG that I’d prefer to have gotten instead.

I like the gun design so I'm leaning more towards a laser satellite or cannon. If Megatron becomes Galvatron and goes from being a P38 to a fucking devastation cannon then Shockwave has earned similar treatment.

It's very obvious that at most you get an upside down submarine mode, but it always has to have a non-gun play mode to it.
I don't mind the idea that his legs become wings like Prime Megatron's does, and leaving the rest of his mode gun-like but I also really like the idea of a satellite laser. Maybe each of his legs split open and the 4 panels become solar panels to complete the look.

I'm not sure there's any better solution for megs these days than a tank.
Flight mode seems strange to me. I might like some of the designs, but they don't feel like megatron.
Plus they usually lack a proper arm canon
The only thing I can think of is a stationary rail gun or something. But I'm not sure kids would enjoy that unless he turned into a full base.

Yes, I have. It's awful. They added flames when that wasn't on the original, the shoulder articulation is awful, wrong legs, unsatisfying transformation, the sword is this pathetic toothpick, double barrel blaster is replaced by this weird cap gun, unpainted eyes, neck that barely moves (and when it does, the head falls off), the sides being painted despite the fact they tab into several places in robot mode, so you'll end up with scrapped off paint in vehicle mode eventually and the trailer is a complete downgrade (but I don't think anyone expected a trailer as good as the original). It's just awful all around, the only reason to get this is if you're desperate for a new one and don't own the original. I honeslty consider the TR and RTS to be better toys since they tried something different even if it didn't work out, while this toy is meant as a new version of the G2 toy and fails spectacularly at that.

RTS was a mix of Movie and Laser Prime, it also has fantastic articulation. Probably one of the best transformers I own, but I get why someone would be put off by the look. TR Optimus looks pretty neat, but suffers from being a TR voyager.

I decided to download the Japanese dub for Armada and holy fuck it's like a completely different show. I remember that Cartoon Network fucked up the script for the US release but did that come before the Japanese version? The overall pacing feels better but that might be because of the Japanese voice acting not being a million words per-minute like the US one.

Japan had more time to finish the scripts and overall plan for the story before broadcasting. US had a comparatively very short time to translate/localise then dub the scripts, so it suffered in overall quality as they couldn't get out of the proverbial trench

I think for the Beast pretenders, maybe do like a transmetal II motif. Like for Snarler, give him the robot beast face with the drill snout and drill tusks, but everything else is the blue furry parts of the pretender shell.
Same thing with carnivac. Mix and match the flesh and fur.
You could probably recolor them into other obscure transmetal II characters like jawbreaker.

Yeah a retool of Razorbeast would work, hybridising the organic and mechanical beasts. The organic shell already has some machine parts, so adding that cool drill snout wouldn’t look out of place.

unless he's clearly obviously less athletic than someone else, that's just a fair gamble. and the only thing prejudice is good for is gambling. The key is knowing this only gives you a, say, 20% edge. it's not good enough to rely on but it's better than most anything else you could do with a quick glance beyond obvious musculature.
