Made my first kit two months ago. I’m hooked. Just ordered some real tools to replace my cat’s nail trimmer and my nail trimmer as my two primary tools. Also ordered some markers for panel lining. I’m trying to shop local for everything but hard to come by stock here. I did snag a pic related as my first MG.
There is a toy store near me that sells lots of diorama materials. Any tips or thoughts on making bases for ur gundam?

Panel line is a meme. Gunplas are 3D objects and as such cast their own shadows. There should be no need to put artificial shadows on them like they are some sort of oversized warhammer mini.

shadows get bigger as things get bigger. more light from nearby surfaces will reflect into a .5mm groove that has minimal depth than a real .5cm panel gap on an actual non-toy object

Nope. Its real bad on gray parts too. Lighter colors are usually pretty good but yeah gray sucks.
If you wanted to get real autistic without painting you could dig a hole there then make some sprue goo (melted runners in plastic cement) and fill it in with that. Would actually get rid of them but it would take longer than painting kek

It's caused by the dye pigments bunching up at the gates when the molten plastic is injected. You don't know how deep it goes so it's not worth trying to sand it off.

I was going to get some blue paint and I have some panel liner to apply. Then I'll be topcoating it unless I can find some waterslides online I want to apply.

idk if you know this, but I hear there aren't too many topcoats that work well with molotow liquid chrome. Some topcoats can dull the shine out. But I just thought I'd let you know.

Well yesterday I suggested adding more blue to go along with the blue on the chest. I would handpaint some on the bit on the leg by the knee, the oblong shapes in the yellow by the hips, the bottom grooves of the skirt armor and mabey the missile pod covering on the legs. Honestly though anon you really gotta work on the nub cleanup, its pretty bad still. Clean the ammo belt up for the Gatling gun then spray it black/silver. Theres pleanty to do still

I have a gunmetal silver paint already, so many I could use that on the gatling gun. Blue paint is on my list. Going to the hobby store tomorrow. I don't want to do anything too crazy since it's all brush paint, so we will see about the gatling gun.

I've been working on Xuanwu this weekend and while putting it together it just kept becoming a strange/bizarre build. It's in the same "line" as Yinghu, which was also kind of odd but nothing like this.

Got me thinking about other odd/unusual/bizarre builds. I've also done MG Aegis which is weird because of the transformation. Anyone else built some similarly strange things?

I love Frame Arms, and basically everything Koto makes if I'm being honest.

That being said they're different. If you go in expecting Bandai levels of ease, they're not quite there but they are close. Frame Arms in general have some floppy issues depending on their age. Earlier ones that include the full Architect Frame (or ones that make heavy use of the parts of it) have some flop. Easy to fix but worth being aware of.

Koto also includes prepainted pieces at times, like the eyes on Xuanwu and Yinghu. Koto also likes their parts separation which is both a blessing and a curse at times. Frame Arms, and Frame Arms Girls vary wildly in what kind of painting they need to be color accurate though, so you kinda just get what you get with that.

I currently have an Iwata eclipse and a shitty harbor freight compressor as my airbrush setup. My compressor seems to on its last legs so I'm wondering what you guys would recommend for an upgrade. I'm fairly happy with my airbrush but if there are ones better than the eclipse It would be nice to know. too

It is, in a sense that you can do things that you did with eclipse with 0.18 custom but better.

Matte hides flaws much better and looks less toy-like. Gloss can look fantastic, but is much harder to work with.
Mr. Super Clear is basically the default rec for good reason.

satin (more matte than semigloss but less matte than matte) is extremely underrated. in my opinion I think it better replicates the look of larger matte objects which get a little bit of a sheen in bright light (full matte doesn't capture this effect).

satin looks great on a painted kit. you can definitely tell the difference between out of the box plastic satin and a painted and satin topcoated build, the paint really diffuises the light differently. i don't think blasting satin onto bare plastic would have the same effect though

I think that comes down more to the fact that unpainted kits will always have a slight translucency for most base colors which makes them seem a bit "softer"

Yes, and the funny thing is, if you thin good paint like MrColor more, you can use half or even 1/3 of the paint you used to use to paint something with the same coverage.

And, of course, with thinner paint you can draw really thin lines.

That's what he recommends but he says you should adjust it to your airbrush, pressure and conditions.

I use a simpler formula: 1 part paint to 3 parts thinner. I thin the paint 1:3 and I thin the clear 1:3 and then I add as much thinned clear to the thinned paint as I feel like. If you add dark gray or black shadows to white or light gray base you can go as high as 1 paint to 5 clear for really subtle shading.

I've used 10 dollar nail files from Amazon, DSPIAE, and Gunprimer. There are clear differences in quality between all three, with Gunprimer blowing them out of the water. I don't care what anyone uses, nobody here is telling anyone else what they can and cannot buy or use. You can build Gunpla with magic erasers and nail clippers for all I care, but sour graping misinfo that only serves to steer the thread into shitposting wars is trash and deserves to be shut down.

I must be using it wrong because so far I'm a bit disappointed by it.
at low pressures it acts like a fine grit sandpaper, maybe 2000 grit, which is fine for it you want to make nubs completely flat and polish them to a similar finish to the surrounding plastic. The problem is that not all nubs are on flat edges (if it's a concave edge you're out of luck), and I often found the file simply did not fit where I needed to use it.
You can push down a bit harder and then it behaves more like a metal file, but it's very easy to make some pretty substantial scratches from the edge of the file, so I really wouldn't advise that.
Also, because it's completely rigid, it can't replace sandpaper if you're polishing a part with smooth curves, but the rounded corners means you can't really get in the edges of parts with ridges either.
Maybe I've been spoiled by my trusted file set (Tamiya Basic File) which, by using different pressures, can both remove nubs quickly and sand them to a nice scratchless finish similar to the surrounding plastic. The flat file also has an abrasive edge on one side and smooth on the other, so is good for corners,and the set includes round/half round files.

Basically, I've found it's good for very specific circumstances, but these bases can also be covered by conventional hobby files with good technique.
I don't regret buying it because it was fairly cheap, but I wouldn't have bought it without these threads, and after hands-on experience with the tool itself, even if more expensive versions are better at polishing, they shape is just not versatile enough.

Also, it's much more likely to make that ungodly nails-on-chalkboard type screech while you're sanding edges, which I really hate.

You mean diamond files? It's hard to find them at the 800 or so medium grits you'd want for painting, the cheapo generic ones are like 200~400 grit. Maybe the manicure ones would be finer.

Metal backed sandpaper wears out, like anons already mentioned, it may or may not be waterproof, and gluing sandpaper to metal is effort.

I only started using glass files this year because they work quicker compared to 400grit sanding sticks and produce less dust. Their downside is that they polish the surface to a crazy mirror shine that I don't need, but since most of the nubs I clean with glass files are on the seams between parts or on wheel rims, who cares.

The lack of diversity of shapes in glass files is a legitimate issue, I would pay good money for a glass file that can get into tight spots.

the ones I'm using(border model) are waterproof and already has strong adhesive on the pads so swapping them out takes 30 seconds out of your life.
I find that rigid 400grit sandpaper cleans off nubs faster and gives you more control than glass files do, also easier to keep clean since you just dip it into water -> then it's good to go and that's not to mention how much more you can do with rigid sandpaper.

At some point Gunprimer improved on the Raser, calling it 1.5 and releasing an alternate design called 2.0. Both are supposedly much better than the 1.0. I've only ever used the 1.5.

If you're using gundam markers you can just use a q-tip with rubbing alcohol. If you're using paint or Tamiya or something then yeah, google it and find out if you need thinner or lighter fluid or something based on the type of paint it is.

The red is flesh tearers red contrast paint, the metallics are leadbelcher washed with nuln oil and drybrushed with runefang steel. The gun casing is leadbelcher washed with black templars contrast, drybrushed with mechanicus grey and weathered with mr weathering ground brown. The chipping is army painter pure red and runefang. Gold is just retributor armor + an overall reikland wash.
And the brushstrokes on the shield are from the gloss varnish I applied for the transfer drying weird. Maybe it's getting old.

I'd start with something small and simple, detail level wise. Not too familiar with gunpla to be honest, but maybe an SD kit?
For paints just get a spray primer (white or grey for bright colors and black for everything else). Automotive ones work fine and are very cheap - Krylon/Rustoleum 2X are good. Just make sure to get the primer, not paint+primer because the latter has a tendency to go on super thick and drown detail. And then base colors for the paint scheme you want. Highlight ones can be mixed by adding a bit of white on the pallet. I recommend Vallejo, they're cheap, high quality, widely available and come in dropper bottles.
For brushes you can get a pack of random non-name synthetics from amazon and then one good brush for detail work. Kolinsky sable brushes from winsor & newton, Rosemary & Co, Rafael are all solid choices. I personally use w&n series 7 size 0 brush as my workhorse. Just look up how to properly take care of the good brushes, so you don't waste it.

Thanks anon. I have a couple of HGs I practice everything on that are Frankenstein kits so I'll be practicing on them first. I planned on getting an assortment of vallejo model colors and I bought some decent and also some cheapo brushes earlier. I'll look into the one you're using too.
I need to look into the spray primers dont have that yet either.
And was that top coated with a spray or how did you "finish" it?

Yeah, I use a spraycan matte varnish as a final step - Mr Hobby super clear matte.
Also get a nekonote station or some other way to hold the bits if you don't have one yet. Some acryllics rub off pretty easily if you keep the bits knocking around on your desk.

I primarily use it on metalics to give them more texture and as a simple and easy way to highlight edges. It doesn't really work on big flat surfaces, but is great for ones with a lot of small details, like fur or ground. You can also use it to brighten up a surface that got too dark after a wash.
It's not really a weathering technique because the look it gives on its own is a very obvious "oh you just drybrushed it" one.
For the weathering to read as actual wear and tear you are better off painting all the chips and stains by hand. My favorite weathering channel is Nightshift. He's a scale modeller and goes very deeply into detail on how to achieve realistic look.

For washes there are multiple applications.
Recess washing (I think you guys call it panel lining?) is used to visually separate parts of the model by creating darker shadows in recessed areas. You just put the wash into recesses, like grooves between panels, into holes or around protruding elements.
Then you typically give metallics an overall wash which gives them a more realistic, oily look.
And you can also use washes to adjust the color of bits. So if one of your colors is too intense you can bring it down by washing it with a dark wash. Generally you want to match the color of the wash with the color you're washing, so dark blue wash for blue/purple or orange wash for yellow, etc. But just a general dark wash, like nuln oil/agrax earthshade can also be used pretty universally.
There are also whole ranges of oil washes which you need to neaten up with a qtip dipped in white spirits, like with panel liner. Frankly, I'm not really familiar with them. This tallgeese was the first time I've used them.

This will be my first 30mm kit, I've only just cracked the box open, and already I like how the instructions show actual images of sprues and where each part is. That's a nice detail, which I'm sure is because these are aimed at a younger audience than mainline gundam kits.

My advice would be to look up video tutorials on what you're trying to do before making any purchases and trying new things first on cheap practice kits you can strip and repaint later.
Also be careful with spraycan varnishes. Check if they cloud on a piece of sprue first. Nothing hurts more than having days-worth of painting effort destroyed by a cloudy varnish.

The painting process should be pretty straightforward and you already have the idea of what to look out for. I'd add that it's also important to let the paint dry completely between layers. Acrylics normally dry extremely fast, but you can still sometimes have puddles of semi-dried paint if you overloaded the brush or overthinned the paint. Painting over those can tear the dried layer of paint off the puddle and leave ugly ridges. So if some area of fresh paint looks visually different, it's probably not fully dry yet.

If you want to avoid 90% of the risk you can also just spray prime the model in the final color and then recess wash/edge highlight it without needing to paint huge flat armor panels. Subassemblies are very helpful for that.

If you're going to use water based acrylics (Vallejo, army painter, reaper, citadel, scale 75, etc.) the retarder isn't really necessary. Unless you want the paint to stay active for longer to do wet blending or something.

is it fine to spray mr.color paints at 5-7 psi? My paints are thin as hell (3 thinner:1 paint .3mm needle). At this 'low' psi, my needle doesn't get clogged anymore, and I can actually spray a tiny amount of paint. And when I wanna cover a larger piece, it seems to work fine as well.

yeah pretty much. i mainly used it to get the eastern model kit waifus at a decent price. didnt care when they would get to me, just as long as they eventually do.
some took 2 weeks, some took 3 months but i would say on average, i get stuff in about a month.

Just finished the initial build on an HG Barbatos Lupus. I love it, but it definitely has some issues. For one, the torso comes detached from the waist way too fucking easily. What's a good way to strengthen the IBO torso/waist ball and socket joint? I've not had a lot of success with CA glue on polycaps. The glue never seems to bond to the polycap, just the plastic of the other part of the joint. I could just be doing something wrong, but hey that's exactly why I'm asking.

no, cheap craft paints are garbage. by spanish paints i was talking about stuff like vallejo and greenstuffworld. craft paints have lower pigment:binder ratios so you always need to paint more layers than you would with higher pigmented modelling paints because they end up pretty transparent after you thin them. i've tried out some craft paints myself out of curiosity and while the blacks and whites are fine (there's practically no different from black and white vallejo from my experimentation) the other colours aren't worth bothering with

You can but probably not much benefit using the normal thinner as a substitute for normal thinner so I'd go with whichever is available and/or cheaper. I however do use the mr color levelling thinner with tamiya acrylics the majority of the time when airbrushing.

If you're planning to use lacquer topcoat: Let it cure for a week, and spray thin coats that dry up almost immediately so the solvent doesn't get a chance to eat into the underlying paint layers.

The solvents in lacquers are more volatile, so they flash off much quicker, but they're also more aggressive.
They generally make for a more durable finish than acrylics.
