In Toy Story, was Rex supposed to be a "cool" toy or not? He appears to have articulated parts and was valuable enough that the company that manufactured him was acquired by Mattel, yet in the movies he's second-tier at best.

the joke is that despite being such a cool dinosaur toy and a staple in any boy's toybox, rex is deeply self-conscious. he's only really second tier because of his scaredy cat nature. were rex a gutsier individual he'd probably be as much of a chad as reptillus maximus. however rex is a follower and thus relegates himself to second banana status.

the mattel line is a reference to the dinosaur toy they based rex on. that being the dinosaur riders t rex, which at the time was made by tyco, until tyco got bought out by mattel in the early 90s.

Notably while you might think this means Rex had a bunch of crazy sci fi tech accessories you never see, the Dinoriders toys were also remolded and resold without their accessories via the Smithsonian Museum as entirely unrelated figures. The museum version does away with the motorized walking gimmick on the T-Rex.

I mean, through Andy's play patterns it's clear he thinks of Rex as one of his coolest toys. And who can blame him, he's a boy in the mid 90's. Jurassic Park, man.

It's only because in the toy world he's got a confidence problem. Probably his "I'm a toy" moment when he realized he wasn't a real dinosaur was so traumatic he became a bit neurotic.

I dont have pics of it, but I've seen people put the dino riders trex armor on rex before. it apparently fits perfectly on him.
