Ironically these tend to be turn offs for me, with recognizable working in some contexts (not opposed to Batman or Superman even though they're well known) and not in others (the more common a design for a character the more it tends to feel generic and I want something new or unusual to change it up).
For example: Batman of Batman of Zur-En-Arrh is colorful, and thats a problem, he's an awkwardly kitsch color scheme
Blacksuit Superman is a simple design and that's a problem, although I know many like the look
Recognizable tends to often lead into generic for me, so I want weird characters like Ghost Maker or weird designs of known characters like Death Metal Batman, or risky takes on known characters like the Comedian Joker
