The only thing I like about these is that their colored belts reminds me of the Shell Storage version of the vintage turtles. This guy kind of ended up being my go-to Raph.

I get he was evil in the show, but his toy was with the good guys. Though, that does make me wonder what a "Turtle Allies" boxset in a similar vein would have. We haven't got reissues of April or Casey, Mondo seems like a safe bet, and would vacmetal be too hard for nuPlaymates to reissue Metalhead? Maybe throw in the Punk Frogs if it's a 6 pack.

There were some high quality mirage stuff, although my preference is usually from the Tales issues. Remember the Leo centric story Blind Sight? It follows the continuity of City At War with a member of the Foot looking for revenge for being blinded in that arc, eventually tricking Leo into killing an innocent while temporarily blinded himself. I loved stuff like that, they’re the only issues I actually kept in my collection like The Path that focused on Mikey and his cat Klunk. There’s some good writing there if you know where to look.

Say what you will about Playmates but these two packs have had a lot of new sculpts. The initial ones were lazy reuses of the Classics turtles but these are entirely new. They aren't good, but they are new.

Good point for Metalhead, but I'm assuming the thought process for Krang/Destroyah was that they're both the "bigger threat" compared to Shredder & Ghidorah being the main villains. If anything, SpaceGodzilla's probably the best fit for Slash, with the various spikes all over his body being made into crystals.

Found a Mikey and Raph 1990 NECA 2 pack on ebay for $59 and ordered it.

At least Cobra-Kai and Street Fighter are martial arts themed and make SOME sense, plus TMNT isn't a stranger to fighting games, but this just feels like they took two popular things and mashed them together. My first thought was that maybe Playmates had previously made Stranger Things toys and this was just a cheap way of milking both licenses but no, this is apparently their first ST product. I just don't think that worked with the star trek ones, it was weird seeing them with hair and pointy ears 'being' those characters, fused to them. it would have made more sense to give them unique roles fitting into the universe (or a modified version thereof) and even an image on the box of a turtle-shell-saucer starship
the monster ones seem to be half fusion half costumes and none of it works. obviously the turtles can't just "be in that universe" because they wouldn't be special aside from, yknow, this idea of splinter becoming a monster hunter and wearing the right gear, etc. or you could have 'what if one of them died and got frankenstein'd back to life with other mutants' maybe. i guess you could have Don USING the invisibility formula.. raph getting BITTEN by a werewolf.. okay maybe that could work.

Decided to cancel all my preorders for the costumed turtle ultimates. Never really liked them as a kid and felt like I was just buying them to be a completionist. I picked up this Sewer Squad 4 pack off Amazon for 12-15 dollars, they must have been clearing them out. All Turtles come with some extra paint on their accessories but other than that are same as the first retail wave. The figures or ok, no ankle rockers and the articulation is a little weird.

This is untrue. He's an existing comic character and Super 7 kept his design quite faithful, aside from adding on stuff that was never shown (like what weapons he might use, or what he looks like without his helmet). The original comic never really went into detail about this stuff so it was a necessary evil in order to create accessories for the toy.

I don't have any nostalgia for Seargeant Bananas, so just on an aesthetic level, I much prefer this Cena-gorilla.

BUT, yes, we are getting new Mirage TMNT, and they are going to be Eastman styled. We will very likely see them (and possibly the Archie Wrestling Turtles they keep hinting at) at SDCC. It'd make sense, since that'd be the big "pop" to bring it all together for the Mirage relaunch.

the fact that real turtles could do this if they wore belts is one of my favorite and most underutilized things about the TMNT. if you actually take the time to draw them with the full bridge between the shell and plastron (instead of cheaping out and coloring that part as skin) and draw its relative concavity compared to the shell, you get this perfect spot for tucking items.
