You'd be surprised. I did exclusively MG when I started. HG seemed too Happy Meal toy to me. Then due to the stock issues, I bought a bunch of HG recently and have been enjoying the hell out of them. Especially some of the newer HG.

While they are not as good as BMC, they are (relatively) cheap and plentiful, so I wouldn't be scared of fucking one up.

I see the IBO influence. The designs don't really bother me. I think the main factor was gundam burn out. I watched half of AGE before dropping it and not touching any of the kits. Didn't bother with RIG nor IBO. After such a long break I'm hoping TWFM will reignite my love of the series.

Knowing how they operate will affect my conclusions in a sense.
Fortunately Gundam is at a point where A.U. are a thing so a show having a rather different style is easier to take or leave.

Unless the show does horribly, it's all but inevitable. Even then, some designs might be loved.
50/50 odds that the Gundams are played up as way too powerful while the Grunts are too dumb. On the other hand the Grunts might actually be pretty smart about taking them on. We'll see.

Feels a bit strange how many parts don't have an area that looks like a barrel or some exit port for the beam. It'll be interesting to see if the show has such details or if they're still hiding details about how these things work.

I get how it's easier to just keep making alternative timelines, but man, it's getting a little much. Most Gundam series end vaguely with "everyone's a happy hugbox now!" so they could easily do a 50/100 year time skip and set a new series in an established timeline like Wing or 00. Hell, they could do a Calamity War Era show if IBO wasn't such trash.

After a very close race with three themes being nearly neck and neck the entire time, the next Groupbuild theme is the Aerial theme!

AERIAL COMBAT GROUPBUILD

Build a robot with flight capabilities designed for atmospheric combat. This can include
>A mech designed for fighting in mid-air (ie: Gouf Flight Type)
>A mech with external flight equipment attached (ie: Aile Strike)
>A mech with a transformable flight mode (ie: Any Variable Fighter)
>A Fantasy mech with its own set of wings (ie: Rune Gods Rayearth/Selece/Windam)
>A support vehicle meant to aid another mech in flight (ie: Core Booster)
The ability of flight is key here, if it's something that can stay in mid-air briefly but can't sustain being in the air for an extended period of time it doesn't count. Also, mechs that can operate in both the earth's atmosphere and space are fine, but mechs that only operate in outer space are not eligible.

i'm looking at getting a set of scribers, mostly for deepening existing panel lines and rescribing ones that have been partially covered up when seam welding. not really interested in scribing new lines because panel lining is my most disliked part of a build anyway.
i also have a koto msg japanese sword that i intend on taking the scabbard and hollowing out (to make an actual functioning scabbard) by sawing it in half then scraping the excess away on each side, i assume a scriber would be the best tool for this?
what sizes should i get? also would you recommend the hook/pull type or chisel/push type?

So I did my first order via AliExpress. Two kits, the MG Tallgeese 2 and the MG Tallgeese 3 from Daban. Same seller. Both shipped the same day, but the following day, the Tallgeese 3 was marked cancelled by seller. I figured it was due to them shipping both in one box. Just got the order today, only one kit, the Tallgeese 3 that was marked cancelled. Anyone got experience with something like this? Should I just wait a few more days to see if it magically shows up, or dispute it now.

Seriously though, measure the grooves you will need to make and get the closest size.

I have those too but I use them rarely. I found them to be harder to control when it comes to depth of the line, it's too easy to dig too deep.

Shoulda gone with darker decals or painted it a darker color first. They get really lost here and it's sort of a waste. Both aesthetically and thinking about practicality lore-wise this goes against the point of decals.

ok sapphire blade anon, i got that olfa knife you recommended for cutting masking tape. you were right, these blades are significantly sharper than my excel brand #11 blades. thanks. gonna keep this solely for masking, i still have about 80 excel blades and the matching handle so i might as well keep using those for nub removal since they do the trick perfectly well

shouldn't be hard with 0.2mm thickness styrene, you can cut it with scissors like paper. Scale and print some stock image as a template or sketch your own on paper.

The front of the model being in the dark makes it hard to tell your shading (if there is any) apart from the natural shadows.
But you seem to know a thing or two about taking pictures (unlike 90% of the crowd here) and you got good glass, so you have potential.

Well, for one, I was just recommending the front lighting for anon. 2 lights are not enough for anything.
My full setup uses 4 lights: 2 in softboxes on the sides, 2 on stands in the front. I don't have a recent picture, pic related is from 2016 and it has an extra softbox on top, but just to give you the idea. And yes, the camera is on a tripod with a remote shutter release.

I can almost promise you that I get more lighting than literally anyone here yet it ends up looking more grainy and harsher than what you have going on, also too dark shadows, a good indication to stop being a cheapskate and just grab some softboxes and do something similar to your setup except with speedlights.

I actually quite like how your Gourai came out (except for the gun being a bit too dark) and Rensouhou is nicely lit too.

I have a flash and I use it from time to time but I found it harder to set up the shot without seeing the actual lighting (plus LED bulbs are cheaper than flashes).

I don't do that anymore. I got a cheap plastic folding table that I can put in the middle of the room, arrange the stands around it however I want, run all the cables etc, it just made it much easier. Takes me about 25min to put everything together.

Thanks for the advice, anons. I made the Leo kit.
Nothing fancy going on with it, just used fine point Gundam Markers to panel-line and one of those fancy paint Gundam Markers to put metallic paint behind the Leo's eye to help accentuate it.
On a side note, a friend of mine mentioned the site newtype, and it feels like forbidden knowledge for how many models they've got. Apparently they do free shipping on orders over $100, so I thought of a shopping list next time I feel like dropping that much money:

How are the kits I chose? The GM 2.0 seems like a good place to start with MGs, Turn A and Sazabi are designs I adore, and GP01fb is one of my favorite designs as well.

Like tamiya? You need to shake the holy fuck out of the bottle, so that the bottom is visible. Tap the applicator against the inside of the bottle neck and make minimal contact with the panel lines, the the liner do the work. Clean up with a q tip and zippo fluid, or a rubber eraser. Avoid getting the liner into seams or between 2 parts and you will be fine.

Yeah, I got kinda scared with sanding, I haven't done it in a while. I used to cut them so much that it left an inward mark, so I didn't try trimming them as much. Hopefully I can shake the rust off before I spend lots of money buying kits.
I think I remember seeing those markers at Hobby Lobby last time I was there. I'll have to grab those.

pro-tip for snapfagging, scratch/rub the shit out of the white nub marks with your fingernail and the color comes back most of the time, also invest in a good xacto knife and nipper set and you can do a pretty good job of removing nubs without sanding

It's a non-consumable version of 2000 grit sanding sticks, basically. Probably useful if for nubs if you don't paint. I still stick with sandpaper, because a soft backing is more suitable for fine grits and polishing.

well when using sandpaper you're probably going to be using 600ish grit, and then you have to buff out any scratches with 1000 grit (or even as high as 2000 grit for stuff like candy coats where you're going to be putting down a gloss primer and need a mirror finish). if you use a glass file, you still have to go over it with 1000/2000 grit sandpaper for primer adhesion but you can just do a quick rub rather than having to make sure to buff out any scratches. imo a glass file is still good even if you paint but the difference is obviously a lot less than if you are snapshitting

In any case, if I need a mirror finish I would polish my surfacer and then rub metallic powder into it.
Either way, at no point will I want my bare plastic to be polished.

they're probably the most accurate to izubuchi's lineart, but they're pretty old so the engineering isn't great (the hg nu even has stickers for the leg vents instead of any moulding), and they don't have much surface detail like panel lines if that's your thing you don't have scribing tools. if you aren't autistic about lineart-accurate proportions the new entry grade nu is vastly superior to the hg

except the plastic is more brittle and a lot of the fittings are much tighter than bandai, so joints on some kits might break if you just pure snapshit them without sanding the joints, and you might break some pegs on disassembly for painting if you don't sand connections or trim pegs diagonally. koto kits have a reputation among snapshitters and bandai babies for joint breakages

I'll have to disagree, bandai always try to make their models as good OOB as possible, and as an example see pic related, these rings would not be part separated on a non-bandai model.
kotobukiya does not care as much about part separation but instead about details, also has better sculptors at work, much sharper plastic and I'd say part fit too.

it means that parts aren't sitting perfectly flush with eachother, something kotobukiya is better at for the most part.

Bandai parts fit fine but there are often hair-width gaps between parts.
Koto parts fit with no gap period. Sometimes you can't tell there are 2 parts joined together.

Paint is not a magical curse, it doesn't ruin airbrushes.
You _can_ clean your airbrush from metallic paint as well as fluorescent paint (which is harder) as well as yellow and ultramarine natural pigment-based paint (which is the hardest). You just need to do it thoroughly.

I was gifted an Iwata hp-c plus. I've been using lacquer paints with it, and flush it out with lacquer thinner, about 3-4 times when it's time to clean up. I usually follow that with 2 flushes of 100% isopropyl alcohol, and then 2 flushes of DI water. I also do a back flush with DI water as well. Should I be fine? idk much about this Iwata brush except that it's pretty pricey.

This is unnecessary. Hardware store lacquer thinner is all you need for clean up.

Teflon or nylon o-rings will hold up to lacquer thinner just fine. Teflon and nylon are both rated to have excellent compatibility with common lacquer thinner ingredients like acetate solvents, acetone, toulene, and -ethanols. That's why those plastics are used in industrial settings when others aren't. You can even replace the cheap o-rings in your chinese airbrush with an aftermarket o-ring of the right size, and it'll probably work as long as the airbrush doesn't have any gaps. They might be stiffer than normal silicone or whatever o-rings chinese brushes use.

Having only watched a few of the Gundam series, I ran out of kits I recognized, so I started buying whatever caught my eye. Trying to pose them or figure out what shelves to display them on/what kits go next to each other, is a minor annoyance. I wish all the series were in one location instead of across multiple apps or not even on streaming at all. Had my Double X posed fighting the Eclipse Gundam, but that triggered people's autism, which in turn triggered mine.

I stand corrected, it IS my favorite masking liquid now. Even over Vallejo.

Reason: it dries slower than Vallejo and when it dries it doesn't get super sticky, which means you can apply complex masks with almost no risk of pulling up the mask you already applied. That's huge.

Basically you want the mask to stay liquid while you're still applying it, because if some of it starts drying and you need to add more to some areas you have a chance of catching a piece of the semi-dried mask and pulling it off, undoing some of your work.
