ToyOtter was on the Toy Anxiety podcast and talked for quite a while about Super Powers, why he's doing Longbox Heroes at all, and why he's doing them in that old Super Powers style.

He also talks about how things work in the industry, why some decisions are the way they are, etc. It definitely gives you an idea of where he's coming from with this. He also says he has upwards of 30 figures digitally sculpted, but obviously they can only happen if the first wave sells.

Yeah I don't think it's looking good for these. This kind of thing always has a massive initial bump of orders and then a huge lull. With a MOQ of 1500 for most of them (I see they lowered the MOQ of the Rocketeer figures to 1000 each), it's not looking good for anyone not named Tick or Rocketeer. With no Kickstarter to offer incentives for bulk orders, they have to rely on the news of these to continue reaching people who haven't learned about them yet. With Fresh Monkey/Toy Otter and the toy news sites already posting this 10 days ago on their sites/socials, plus BBTS front paging these for the last week's newsletter, it seems like there aren't too many more ways to reach out to potential customers.

Nah, that never usually works. If people aren't interested in the majority of what's offered NOW, showing stuff even less likely to ever get made will just lead to disappointment and arm chair toy designers. Fresh Monkey Fiction did exactly that with their (maybe two?) failed attempts at launching a super articulated 4" line with many of these same characters. They showed like 25+ figures that were waaaaaay off in the future if the early stuff got funded and it didn't help the kickstarter progress at all.

I love these figures. I really do. But even as someone who loves them, the price seems pretty high, especially when you have to factor in shipping costs after. They should have been priced around Super 7's $18 Reaction cost to survive IMO. With McFarlane putting out near identical (in style and production costs) 5" Super Powers figures for just $10 each, that makes the price of these hurt even more. $25 just seems too much, even for an indie, small toy manufacturer.

Usually like 75-80% of the backers are in the first few days and then only jump up again at the last few days, and that's usually after additional things are being unlocked or the price becomes a better value due to additional things being included.

If he can sell his for $10 and still profit even after wholesale cost to Walmart, there's no way $25 is the lowest Fresh Monkey could have sold these for. FMF's Eagle Force 4" super articulated figures are $27 and those have like 4x the amount of parts and production costs should be MUCH higher than these 5" retro figures. Even the small royalty costs in these should not make these cost nearly the same as those.

Nah, you're not getting it. The tooling costs alone for all the other mentioned figure lines are going to be much higher than the tooling for these Longbox Heroes figs. There are no acetal(POM) parts in these. That alone should cut the tooling costs by about 1/3 compared to those other super articulated lines since they use PVC, ABS and Acetal parts. Plus manual labor and assembly costs will be much higher since those other lines all have like 30-40+ parts per figure. Longbox figs have like 10-12 parts per figure max.

Anon has a point though. Why are the prices on this line so high? The part count is definitely lower than all the other lines and I believe he's correct about the tooling / mold making stuff too. These don't have any type of joints that use that material that makes the discs like other type of action figure joints use.

Right, lower numbers produced = higher cost per item. Price still seems high compared to their other small run toy lines and toy lines from other kickstarter level creators selling toys. I love Fresh Monkey and have bought almost all their lines before from Six Million Dollar Man to the recent Santa figures but even these made me hesitant based on the price.

FMF changed the minimum required for the Rocketeer figures to be made. Until yesterday, each of the three needed 1000 pieces ordered each. Now it's a combined 2100 for the three figures. This kind of annoys me cuz it definitely shows they have a huge profit cushion in there. They could just wipe away 900 pieces from the order minimum as easily as that? That's about 1/3 of the previous minimum order requirement! So what are the ACTUAL minimum numbers required for the rest of the figures then?

No, more joints = more parts = higher tooling costs. And if any of those joints are swivel hinges (like with a disc in the part), then even more tooling will need to be made since those parts are made with a different type of plastic. The current figures only have cut joints and knee hinges where the two halves of the ABS thighs sandwich the PVC lower leg between them.

So $25 is over double what the price of the new Super Powers line is and only slightly more than a soulless Reaction figure to get some neat indie comics characters that will match up with my vintage SP set. I think I’ll bite on the set. Toy Otter has done extensive research by gray priming SP figs and took them apart to study them. It’s cheaper than I can get a custom done. My friends Eagle Force figs are really nice. He says he’s got about 30 models already done too.

I like the figures too and hope they all get made. Toy Otter's got a cool IG and has done a lot of great work including these, but the knee joints on all of them look off and I can't put my finger on it. The original Super Powers knees, the McFarlande ones, and the 4 Horseman line's knees all look better to me so that's kind of a bummer but I still want to see this line succeed. Excited about other IP potential. Savage Dragon, Dredd, more Tick characters, Hellboy would all be fucking cool.

I want this line to succeed. But I think Fresh Monkey is just the absolute worst at marketing and getting people excited about their products. They've had a lot of failed kickstarter toy launches because they do the main reveal and then have nothing else to update people, or show off, give behind the scenes info, etc etc. People have nothing to talk about and the product gets no chatter online.

They haven't updated these order totals on their site in about 5 days now, no new posts on Instagram or Facebook, not posting anything else about this line to even start some kind of chatter online or anything. Nobody on any forums, social media, or youtube has talked about these since the couple days after the reveal either. Toy Otter has posted a few things on IG about his process and some fun art, but Fresh Monkey has been pretty silent. Why is the sculptor doing more promotion than the company producing the toys? I want this line to make it and FMF is doing their usual zero effort to promote and get people excited or talking about their product.

Yeah FMF isn't even acting like they care to have this be a success :(. 5 days with no numbers update, they don't use their twittter even though they could easily get the word out more there, no posts on insta after the reveals, same with facebook too. They are even posting about other companies' toys instead of their own there.

He's the designer but you'd think the company who will me making them who will actually be profiting from the existence of this line would act like they give a shit and market the hell out of it to get ppl excited and talking. Fresh Monkey has a pattern of doing this like the other anon above said. i remember in one of their Kickstarters they didn't post a single update during the entire length of the campaign and when it didn't meet the goal they said something to the effect of "Oh well, we tried and there wasn't a market for this product since we sent press releases to many sites and got many people to see it when it first launched". Literally what? When all other companies are constantly posting engaging content, updates, behind the scenes stuff, doing interviews o youtube channels, etc to keep online interest alive through the entire length of a crowdfund period.

Every Bandai Tick minus the small 2 inch PVCs that were painted all over had torsos made of low quality UV sensitive M-ABS plastic. Every single fucking Tick has a yellow torso. THe first release, the talking gimmick ones, the huge 12 inch one. Only Mucus Tick is fine due to being clear green

This Longbox one is the only one that is kinda an improve
