Is there anything more depressing than seeing someone sell off their entire collection on ebay? Pages and pages of listings, all from the same person, parting with his beloved collection..

Same thing is happening with other types of collections when a parent dies. In any case, it must be pretty sobering to realize that the bulk of anything people usually ‘collect’ is not really very valuable on the resale market, overall.

Whether an object has monetary value or not, there is someone out in the world who would also enjoy having it. It’s our decision when to pass that thing on or allow it to be lost forever.

Buying in bulk at estate sales is good, make a low-ish offer on a larger quantity on the afternoon of the first day or on the second day and it’s often accepted. Flip what you don’t actually want. It’s a good little side gig.

But you can usually blame the collector’s senpai - they probably just donated his ‘dumb plastic toys’ when they didn’t sell at the yard sale. It’s a tax write-off.

I think the part from “we are thrilled “on is just a generic tagline that they probably put at the end of each sales post, it doesn’t pertain to the departed collector. I have no illusions about my own toy collection, it’s not going to remain intact and enshrined as some sort of monument after I depart the earth. If I wanted that, it’s pretty simple to achieve - I’d collect something with notable value and then will it to an institution that had an active interest in preserving it. One regional museum may have an interest in 1-2 of my more rare artist items, that’s about the extent of it.

I'm about to be in a position like this. Rent is fucking my life up along with inflation plus with having a child now and my backup funds have been utterly drained. I'm depressed because half of the reason I kept all of my childhood collections was for the child I'd eventually have. Now I have to sell my collection to deal with the cost of living spirialing out of control. I fucking hate capitalism.

Eh, it depends. I've heard stories of collectors departing from their collections and feeling a weight lifted off their shoulders.
What fucks me up is dumbass parents donating or selling their kids valuable childhood toys behind their backs for pocket change.
My worst fear, is that I'll die in a freak accident, and my retarded mother will sell or bequeath my rare and valuable figures to my snot nosed spoiled brat of a cousin.

Yeah it's a bummer to think about. When I was a kid my parents got divorced so while my mom and I were gone moving into an apartment, my dad sold all my toys and a lot of my video game stuff. It was all well played with and not really much of value probably but it sure made me feel bad. I wish I still had it, even if for only sentimental value.

I'm a full time lego reseller that mostly works in the low-mid-cost open box type market. I typically stalk container/estate sales, stuff like that, but I also find troves of shit in yard sale type environments and particularly facebook. It's a mixed feeling when I show up to buy an entire lego star wars lot or a whole lego city and it's clear that the listing/sale is through a parent or spouse that doesn't understand what they are selling. More than several times I knew for a fact that the owner of the collection was a college kid away at school, and I purchased thousands of dollars of their lego for 100 bucks flat without them ever knowing. I just show up in my pickup with a few home depot boxes and clear out their shit in five minutes. The other one that had me mixed is was a widow selling her dead husband's collection and she didn't even know where to begin valuewise, so I just served a lowball and she went "that much?" Made out with net 10k+ for 500 down. The only ones I genuinely feel nothing over are the kids with hundreds of clones. Fuck clones.

I see people on eBay who must be doing that with buying up doll collections - so I may look into that, because there are so many articles online telling boomers that their ‘numbered collectibles’ are worthless - yet things like several lines of certain dolls are still robustly priced in the ‘sold’ lists on eBay.

Definitely do your research so you're not just buying up trash for cheap, but the big lots from divorces, dead people, abandoned containers, etc. are great for buying big coveted items for relatively cheap. You need the capital to obtain - and throughput to handle - the *rest* of the shit that comes from a big lot, but it's worth it if you can manage. Most of it is going to be extremely offline - I'm talkin' newspaper obituaries, diner chit chat, making the drive just to find an address, showing up to the fire sale, etc. etc. If you get lucky and everything lines up you can run off with some big fat gets while kids online wait for listings that never happen.

I’m hearing you. Setting up a lot selling and donation for the lesser side stuff shouldn’t be too hard, I started to pick up some first edition books and pretty expensive labels in China at local and regional yard sales and estate sales and then this thread made me think ‘hey, why not include some dolls and toys’. I’m looking at the eBay ‘sold’ listings as something solid, but not sure where else to check for solid pricing. The ‘for sale’ listings on Etsy, eBay and even Depop are all over the place for ‘vintage’ trash of all kinds.

Yeah I'm on the same boat too as far as online sales histories being all over the place. It's really tough to get a meter sometimes unless you know an in-market pro or hang around in the venues where those sales tend to happen. When I started I was willing to broker almost anything but I've since found that focusing my time on specifically lego pays the bills and makes for an entertaining life. I have no specific advice for whatever toy market you'd be interested in staking out but I'll just say second hand toy sales is a roller coaster but if you focus on building out your IRL network and getting on the pulse of your chosen market it can be a genuinely a great time.

that image you posted is so true when it comes to hot wheels. i collected hot wheels for a fews years and its addicting hobby. i would waste a whole day visiting various targets and walmarts looking for a bargain. what killed it the hobby for me is scalpers. the people who work in the stores will take all of the valuable cars in the stock room and leave the worthless cars for the shelves. motherfuckers would sell premium cars and treasure hunts for triple the price online. i love name brand toy cars but i'm better off buying 1:18 scale cars instead
