The ability of flight is key here, if it's something that can stay in mid-air briefly but can't sustain being in the air for an extended period of time it doesn't count. Also, mechs that can operate in both the earth's atmosphere and space are fine, but mechs that only operate in outer space are not eligible.

Nothing wrong with adding white per se, as long as there is a noticeable difference between the highight and shadow colors. If your shadow color were darker there would be no problem with the highlight.

In pic related the shadow is way WAY overdone (it was my first attempt to use an airbrush), but the difference between the light and shadow colors is actually okay, the color just needed to be much more dilute so that the contrast is not that huge.

Yeah, I goofed and probably could've added more white. Hindsight 20/20. I only added 3 drops of white to 5 drops of char pink, and a drop of gloss just like masked modeler, which probably blended the pinks even more than it should've. Lesson learned though.

How did you achieve the different colors of red on it? I painted a base coat on one of my kits but its so flat and dull looking I dont know how to make it look good after. The paint itself looks fine but its just boring not sure how to make it look nicer

Different anon but mix a tiny bit of white, add highlights. Mix a tiny bit darker, add shadows. Maybe try a (subtle) wash to bring out surface details.. basically anything you can do to break up monolithic monotone areas adds to the sense of scale and visual interest. But don't expect to be getting it right first try!

Speaking of 1/144 and large kits, I was once looking to buy pic related, but had the good sense to check dimensions and it turned out that it would be larger than literally every display cabinet I had so that was the end of that.

I've used zenithal priming, where you fully spray prime the model black and then spray it with white from the top (where the zenith would be). This creates a nice black to white gradient, that then can be stained with washes, inks or contrast paints.

Then I've used a red contrast paint from citadel all over the model. Contrast paints are slightly transparent, so it combines with the zenithal and results in a nice red gradient. You can use any other transparent paint for this.
I've also done edge highlights with a brighter, more saturated red on most raised surfaces.

Citadel is fine quality-wise, but is extremely overpriced when compared to other brands like vallejo or army painter. Broadly speaking, any water based acrylic paint for miniature painting will cover gunpla kits just fine after you prime them. Use what you have available, though I'd recommend vallejo.

read the manuals carefully. thats the most important thing. when i first starting building it, I was usually making mistakes like didnt put a small part in or snap it together backwards because I didnt read the manual carefully., making me have to take apart the pieces again.

But new modern kits have better manual illustrations but still doesnt hurt to be more cautious

pick two HG kits, one should be the cheapest you can find so you don't feel bad if you fuck up and then another you like
also get good nippers but don't go overkill (anything in the $20 range is good enough, you don't need godhand)

Did you apply a base coat of red after priming or did you only use the contrast paints for a "base" coat?

It was zenithal priming, then citadel contrast.
As for other paints, any transparent paint can work (or a wash, for that matter). I think army painter has a line of "speed paints" that are supposed to fill the same niche. Possibly tamiya clear paints as well, but I've no experience with them so ymmv.

Scribing tape is self-adhesive and the glue is pretty strong. Attaching a metal piece with 2 scraps of masking tape is not nearly as secure.

Painting it won't make it look good. It needs a complete rework from the ground up. You're legitimately better off making your own with any kind of 3D printer. Hell free handing one with a 3D fucking pen would be better than this sorry piece of shit.

Bought the beskar coat Mando from Bandai and found this blemish on it, I assum it's some gunk stuck under paint or something, I tried contacting the seller and he showed me another copy with the same defect on the same spot, is this common or is he trying to swindle me?

If you're putting the waterslide decal on a smooth surface then you don't even need a decal softener. Just varnish before and after.

What's a good first-time Master Grade? I was tempted to impulse buy the GP01fb kit, but I've never made an MG before, and a part of me feels like I should test the waters first.

That's a really old one so probably needs a bit of work to get it on par with newer kits. Kyrios and Dynames are really good newish MGs that aren't super complicated parts count wise

good, simple to follow build, have a semi good internal frame, no overblown gimmicks, have a good silhoutte and great articulation.

Apparently neither my local hobby store nor hobby lobby carries sanding sticks or sponges. And I don't really want to spend shipping on just getting a few 400/600/800 sanding sticks. Would a crafts store like Michael's or a place like Home Depot having something comparable?

Micheals is a maybe. Home depot is a yes. But do be careful what you buy. Grit notwithstanding there are some paper types meant for sanding glass or metal that are much more coarse. Could try the glass nail file beauty supply option too if you arent afraid of being a nerd in front of women. Grab a file and some buffing/shining blocks and youll be fine.

any wood sandpaper is fine, but always grade the sanding up a bit up

like if you want a 400 model kit sanding stick, use a 600 grit normal sandpaper. if you want to use a 800 model kit sanding stick, use a 1000 grit sandpaper

They all use the same few grit sizing systems, but the problem is that there's like 3~5 systems so it gets confusing.

As for "Wood-specific" labeled sandpaper, the only thing it implies is that the sandpaper aren't designed to be used wet. How abrasive it is is still based on whichever grit system the manufacturer uses.

Most of the sanding sticks sold by places that sell gunpla, are from brands that know you'll be using them on plamo plastics. Where sandpaper is for wood, metals, etc and glass files are for nails. While they work, they have draw backs. Glass files leave the plastic almost too smooth and kinda glossy and sandpaper abrasiveness is not uniform.

You act like plastic is some specialized case requiring highly specific equipment. Most sandpapers list plastics under their intended uses. You just need to buy the right grits. I have used many different things to sand over the years and the vast majority of them were fine, ranging from hardware store sandpaper to expensive sanding sticks from Japan. Unless a product is so good that I can detect a unique and delicious flavor or texture that competitors do not provide, buying generics saves money and usually makes no difference in quality. I actually test out this kind of thing a lot, at the grocery store I will often buy one of each brand so I can figure out which ones taste best and whether they're worth the price vs. a cheaper one.

I don't know why you thought that was a "gotcha," it's a smart and economical way to eat well on a budget.

Do you guys deliberately go for varying finishing levels/styles depending on the kit/grade or stick to one way of doing things for a unified, cohesive look across a display shelf? For example, I just snapped my first gunpla kit together and plan on leaving it that way because the Revive RX-78-2 feels like such a deliberate entry point (and it'll be fun to be able to visually track my improvement with each kit), but I'd love to do say an MG 3.0 or RG looking like a battered machine (think classic final shot pose) while an MG 2.0 one I'd enjoy making look as pristine and minimalist as I could to match what you see in the original anime, and PG would feel like a challenge to paint up and go all out for realism... but a crime to weather.

Where do you guys keep your spare weapons? Finished Epyon's main body. The midnight blue casting was way too light. In my memory it was black. It seems robot damashi and metal spirits had the same idea. So I tiered sections black for more contrast. Was also debating gold over yellow, but I decided that would mute the palette too much and take it farther from the anime.

Because bandai has always put out a 1/100 ng/non mg line for AUs. IBO was no different here, only bandai decided to take the extra step and gave them full (albiet mechanically basic) inner frames.
MG kit came later long after it came clear ibo kits was a sucess. With the mg being fairly sucessful and most of the engineering problems have been tackled. Why bandai is refusing to make more MG ibo gundams is anyones guess beyond retarded management.

I want to use Testors Fluorescent Yellow for a build, I've read a lot about enamel paints and how they can damage plastic models and needed special preparation. What I understood was:
>I can only use enamel thinner
>Said thinner can make the plastic brittle
>Thus I must use a lacker (not enamel) primer to protect the plastic
>Mr Color's paints are acrylic with a lacker base, so Mr Finisher 1500 will work as a lacker primer
>Said lacker primer will work fine with the enamel paint

I know Tamiya also makes a fluorescent yellow in a spray can, but I feel more confortable with an airbrush.

Pretty much, although enamel thinner is generally only damaging if it seeps into cracks or joints and stays there for a long time.
If you're spraying single pieces you probably won't cause any damage, but fluo paints need a white base layer anyway.

there will definitely be discoloration because the clear paint isn't invisible.
it's nice though because you can have UV reactive metallic colored thingies. like the lights on pic related - painted with gaianotes fluorescent clear.

That was my first properly painted TSF, I think it was also the first time I used fluorescent paint.

It had a ton of inaccuracies though (compared to the official Age art) so I remember having to do a bunch of plaplating and resin casting.

Haha no, the prologue kits just came out last week for Japan. At best the US gets them in September. Reprints take ~3 months to get to the US but new releases are rushed a bit more, but minimum 1 month later than jp release generally.

Good for filling in the joints too to give kits a bit more weight, and can work as an adhesive in its own right for some things. Especially older kits and pokemon kits that don't have many internal parts

luckily pretty sure the version I have put it right and included the fixed blades and sniper attachments, kinda regret getting it because I realized I wanted to do a valkyries one instead and now it's getting a rerelease.

So how bad is resin dust really?

I always firmly believed that it really is bad for your lungs, can cause cancer, etc. since it's what I always heard, so when I found out my pal had been doing resin kits for years with no mask or proper ventilation, I freaked out on him a bit since I didn't want to see the guy dying.

He just looked at me like I'm stupid though then showed me a couple sources online stating that resin dust is only toxic when it isn't fully cured and only for certain types of resin.

Did I fall for a meme my whole life, or will my pal be dead in the next ten years?

When it isn't fully cured it isn't solid enough to produce dust, you absolute imbecile. Urethane resin precursors (part A iirc) contains isocyanate, which is what you want to huff to make it quick and not wait for the lung cancer to do its job.

tl;dr; people who say resin dust is safe should not be convinced otherwise, natural selection needs to work as intended.

Very normal for the well-adjusted Spacenoid. When I was first into Gunpla I picked up every 1/144 Zaku variant I could get my hands on, and a few doubles of stuff like the basic Zaku II and the F2s from 0083. Tossed a lot of them out because they were earlier rough builds that didn't meet my standards anymore and I didn't want to go back and fix up a couple dozen kits. Regret that a lot now that older kits aren't as easily available.

It really depends on the manufacturer, big bandai models for example can be even easier to build cause the parts are bigger, kotobukiya ones are harder cause the plastic is harder and more brittle, you need to glue some stuff and sand some joints. I don't have any experience with the plaiobot line specifically though

It's not really about the size of the model, it's about the company. Nobody is as advanced or rich as Bandai. so Gundams are always gonna be the most solid and well-engineered for the most part.

Kotobukiya is the closest to Bandai quality, and they've gotten a lot better recently. But their older kits are sometimes hand grenades, they sometimes use INCREDIBLY tiny parts, and sometimes you need to sand pegs or balljoints because they are too tight and may snap or not fit. Mostly though, modern Koto builds go smoothly.

When you get into smaller or newer manufacturers like Sentinel, Max Factory, Wave, Aoshima, etc. (or ancient kits), you will start to run into bigger problems, like poorly thought-out engineering or parts that don't fit together right and need to be puttied or modified. And it goes without saying that a lot of these troublesome kits require glue even if they don't say so on the box.

Basically, Bandai is a nice little walled garden to play in where generally everything works right. Outside, it can be a wild world sometimes.

I wonder if I'm alone in this, but my interest in gunpla is as highly posable action figures, rather than going crazy with the paints and hyper realism. But I prefer the model kits over the actual action figures because they tend to have more detail and better articulation.

After I've built a new kit, it stands on my pc desk where I will just keep posing it as a sort of fiddle toy. I will usually have one fed and one zeon suit so I can pose them shooting or punching each other.

yeah, i'm with you there. Robot Damashiis are increasingly a turnoff to me, they seem so tiny and underdetailed for the price, and their advantages in articulation are getting smaller and smaller as Gunpla engineering improves.

Plus, RDs have never been great with paint apps. Most of them are just cheap looking unpainted plastic for the most part, with visible nubmarks even. So yeah, I prefer Gunpla, I can paint enough to do simple shit and it's a lot cheaper and more satisfying.

I didn't have time to watch the whole thing but i skimmed it. seems mostly like he's just teaching how to paint, like literally. I learned most of this stuff in my intro art classes. Stuff like the melamine sponge are useful, but it's really just wet sanding with a very very fine abrasive. The real useful part there is the knowledge that you can never re-brighten the paint the same way again, thus necessitating the wetsanding.

that's more of a technique used for smaller more detailed figures no? but the concept of going from black all the way to white? as someone who used to do that, don't bother.

yeah, you missed the point

the point: doing brighness variations using primer on the bottom means your base coat needs to be transparent enough for the primer variations to still show through but uniform enough so your coverage doesn't suck and thats a pointless difficulty that you can avoid by doing brightness variations with the shadow/highlight on the top. the end

not exactly, if you're thinking about the ease of the mechanisms and building the kit then bandai is king.
there's tons of other manufacturers who do a lot of things better, i.e. sharpness, detail, part fit and clever engineering for painting specifically.
