Why are/did toy companies making/make toys for R rated movies and sell them to kids? Wouldn't the audience be too small unless they knew people ignored the rating system?

But I mean, let's be real the amount of kids who managed to watch stuff they weren't supposed to is astronomical and parents buying their toys probably didn't care enough to make the connection or they just thought their kids wanted a cool toy whose source they didn't know about

Nah, I was a kid when the Kenner Aliens line happened and I had already seen the 2nd film on repeated VHS watches. Plus I liked the old Konami Arcade game they did.

Kids like gore and monsters, doesn't take a genius to work out that a cool monster toy will sell regardless who the movie was aimed for.

Pretty much this. Besides, things like Alien and Predator, and a bunch of those properties also existed as comics and stuff which kids had much easier access too than the movies. There are also things like the old Kenner Alien line being based on an axed Aliens cartoon series, and such.

I think Kenner thought the parents would see the movie and then they would buy the toy for their kids. It's not like the figure had tits (the head was a benis tho), so a Xeno was another monster that could be made into a toy like Godzilla or Frankenstein.

It still backfired for Kenner tho in 1979 when parents demanded the Kenner Xeno toy be removed from shelves.

One of my all time favorite VHS tapes I had as a kid had recordings of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie and Terminator 2. It was 8 year old me's favorite tape. Do kids not see R rated action movies anymore?

It was to highlight that as a child I enjoyed the goofy kiddie stipuff like Power Rangers while simultaneously enjoying rated R films like T2. I have a lot of fond memories of Arnold movies specifically as a kid. I remember Predator scaring the shit outta me when I was 9. It was great.

Yeah, my parents divorced when I was 8. My mom told me to cover my eyes when a pair of tits was on screen until I was probably 17 or 18. My dad was renting me Hellraiser movies when I was 10.

The real answer is these movies weren't even rated when toylines were planned. In some cases where they were basing it off a franchise like Alien, yeah they could guess it was rated R, but with stuff like Robocop they were just looking at the cool robot man that'd make a good toy. After so many companies passed on star wars in 77, toy companies started an arms race to find the next breakout movie.

Sci-fi genre films had always been considered somewhat juvenile and acceptable for kids even if there was gore in it. Adults in the past considered stuff like Body Heat and The Postman always Rings Twice and The Godfather as adult movies; they dealt with mature and nuanced subjects. On the surface Aliens is just a bunch of spacemen shooting monsters, not high adult entertainment. These movies were things you'd watch as a family, outside of sci-fi nerds normal adults weren't talking about Terminator sequels like modern adults do with MCU movies now. They'd enjoy them, but it wasn't a cult mentality.

Studios target ratings and decide on what they want for the movie before it even gets rated. Alien and RoboCop were never going to be less than an R rating, they can tell from the initial script because they know the lines for PG13

Fox wanted to convince the UK to rate Alien AA (14 and up) but the UK wanted an X because of sexual themes. Eventually Fox accepted because they thought an X rating would sell even better as a horror flick
They could've easily convinced the board to give them that AA, so ratings aren't as simple and straightforward as you might think
Hell, in my country The Thing is rated as fine for 12 year olds
There's a good chance toys were being made with the idea these films would be rated lower than they actually did

You didn't need to watch the movies to know the characters from posters and ads and know that they were cool. As a kid, buying the toys might even be a way to enjoy the franchises that adults and cool kids talked about if you couldn't watch the movies.

Toy companies aren't necessarily privy to that, or care, especially back then. They just saw a cool robot guy or spaceship and made toys based on that. Or, funded a cartoon based on that to make things more accessible to kids.
Plus TV and movies back then were watched by the whole family , it was understood that when parents were watching something they'd talk to there child about anything they found questionable, and that kids were watching stuff that was rated R.You could sell a toy of Archie Bunker's grandson because everyone was gathered around the TV.

This is it. Kids were watching Aliens and Robocop in theaters, Robocop 2 is the first movie I ever saw in a theater at 5. Back then of it wasn't a drama it was considered for kids, that's why they also made toys for fucking Robin Hood with Kevin Costner and you bet your ass we got those for christmas.
