They were inspired when some English woman was given an old minstrel show toy
She didn't understand what it was based on and just thought it was cute and wrote it into her book
Upon finding out golliwog became a racial slur, she was horrified

There was a golliwog shop in a shopping centre near me, which mysteriously burnt down a couple of years ago. I can't help but think someone set fire to the centre just to get rid of that one shop.
