Kazimeirz Dabrowski (spelling butchered but close) worked on a psychological theory he called "Positive Disintegration."
His theory provided that there were plenty of people who were well integrated into a low level existence, where they cared only for basic immediate needs, and had no drive or personality of thier own. These robots may range from criminal psychopaths, to CEOs chasing the dollar bill, think Patrick Bateman type.
Above these were those who were socially integrated - the numbed masses. They really just follow what everybody else is doing. They do not have thier own ambitions or goals, yet, really.
For true personality formation, these levels of automatic control have to disintegrate, and a new higher level control must appear, and dominate.
