The Arecibo installation was a gigantic, 900 ton, adjustable radio telescope array, suspended with wires above a gigantic dish built into a giant karst sinkhole located near the town of Arecibo, in Puerto Rico.
I could talk about its capabilities, but I honestly don't know anything at all about astronomy, reading from people who do, it would seem that in spite of being built 56 years ago, and radio telescopes like these being obsolescent, it was still giving good results to its last days, and had advantages over other methods, and it was a lot more powerful than the Chinese FAST installation, which has a much larger dish, but a far smaller telescope array.
It also had much untapped potential, it was once upgraded many years ago, improving its power tenfold, likely it could have been upgraded even more, and it still was used to make discoveries until very recently.
It's engineering was very impressive to me, the scale and weight of it all was incredible.
