So does the name field. Adding "since4pass" when a name field and tripcodes exist is not making any amount of difference in terms of anonymity

I don't think that'll be a lasting thing, and even if it does, I think people will start ignoring it, hell, I won't be surprised if it becomes a standard option in 4chan plugins to not display the badge.
I mean, will people even remember to do it after a while? There's only so much mileage you can get out of the badge at any rate.

I think moot and Hiro would love to run this site totally free if they could, but it doesnt work that way.. 4chan Passes is the lesser of evils in ways to make money. It's shitty but its gotta make money somehow.

Well, see, there's this crazy thing called donations, which work especially well when you have a very dedicated community in financial danger. But I'm sure you've never heard of something as advanced and complicated as that.

I thought you were referring to 4chan's terms of service. If you were referring to paypal's, then you're retarded, because 4chan doesn't need to use paypal to get donations. People already contribute money directly to the site via credit card for 4chan passes, just remove the getting shit in return part, make a neat little box where you can type in an amount, and hey presto, you're receiving donations the exact same way you were already getting income. If there's a bank account and routing number, and an online system to receive and verify deposits that is currently working fine, then its trivial to change it from a store to a donation booth.

4chan Passes are glorified donations.. moot said it himself, he *could have* put up a donation button, but he decided to give something in return instead. In this case, have people not have to type captchas. Thats a great offer in return for donations. /vip/ is just icing on the cake that came much later.

This has been the relaxed sort of board I've always wanted. I don't like the idea of a paywall in principal but this is a nice incentive to buy a pass that has never felt worth it to me in the past. Which is odd because I've always wanted to donate, but on my terms. While I know the pass was added to give something back, psychologically speaking making it a transaction turned me off strongly to the idea. Adding more incentive to buying a pass is the next best thing to accepting straight donations because at least I can persuade myself that there's some value to me in doing so. Admittedly a portion of that current value that led me to finally buy one came from Hiro stoking rumors of things being in the red. Even at a marginal chance at it being the truth contributing to keep the site alive feels worth it to me, enough that it overrides being scammed of 20 bucks.

That said the lack of financial disclosure from Moot and now Hiro has always been a sore spot. It doesn't really matter if the site turns a profit or is a moneypit but I'd like to at least see the money. Right now I'm filled with doubt of how authentic this money scare is because everything seemed fine when Moot left and I remember him saying there shouldn't be problems for the foreseeable future. I have no problem with supporting the owner but I have no stomach for being misled and this being the first big financial hiccup in several years it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Overall I think /vip/ is a fine board as long as only posting is kept behind the paywall and it makes a difference in the site's solvency. The since4pass is pointless outside of perhaps this board. However, these changes have negligible impact on anons and is a lot less intrusive than other proposed moneymakers.

4chan being in bad financial shape seems plenty plausible. Especially since I imagine Hiro is less inclined to prop up 4chan the way moot did when it was a net loss.

This is probably the biggest reason I've wanted to see the numbers. I've always felt bad thinking about the possibility of Moot not turning a profit from this site. He deserved it considering this is one of the top 1000 sites in the world. It's never seemed very profitable to me and I just wish Moot wasn't too moral to have rejected cash donations.
For the long term picture this site shouldn't have to rely on money out of anyone's pocket and should be self sufficient. Hopefully Hiro seemingly having less of a tolerance for operating at a loss will lead to a solution. This site really is odd on par with most more users should increase profit and content but here it's negatively correlated. We benefit the most by keeping people out.
