Why is mental illness such a big thing these days? As someone who is apparently perfectly mentally healthy, I have to ask: What the fuck happened to millennials that made them all so depressed?

You might want to clarify about millenials because a millenial is someone born betweeen 1982 and 1996. You could be Generation Z for all I know because you could be 20 or under but a good chunk of the people here are millenials. Mental illness is just an unfortunate combination of genetics. I'm a paranoid delusional schizophrenic for example which is pretty rare at less than 1%. There are a lot of younger people that will self diagnose in some misplaced idea that being unique to a rare level somehow is a good thing. I would not wish my condition on anyone and the idea of people actually wanting to be mentally ill is terrifying. Reminds me of when I was a teenager and all the goth kids said they were clinical psychopaths to be edgy. They will do things that are fucked up to justify to themselves that they are broken. They may be broken but I think it is nurture with them wanting to be crazy over nature with actually being clinically mentally ill. Any "celebration" of mental illness should aim for the goal of wanting to minimize stigma and a bunch of assholes parading around mental illness as a good thing is completely misguided.

Nothing. It's just that doctors and mental health professionals have gotten better at detection. It's just like autism, there's always been autists, but it looks like a new epidemic because there's better detection.

The American Medical Association and other similar groups routinely change the diagnosis criteria for many illnesses which leads to physicians being able to diagnose said illness in a larger number of people. Autism and alcoholism both come to mind.

For me personally it runs in the family. I didn't realize it until I was older, but looking back and reflecting it just so happened that everyone in my family line suffered severe depression when they were younger.

I just happened to have the distinction of being worse off than anyone else in my family history having what is effectively a continuous existential crisis from age eight to fourteen is kind of rough desu

I guess I should just be glad that it happened when I was young so I learned good coping mechanisms that I can take with me through the rest of my life. In then end I would say I'm better for it.

Don't know what everyone else's excuse is.
