I bought the Vive recently. It's pretty immersive with head phones but there are limitations like your play area but it does have very cool stuff. The "games" I enjoy most are replications of places in the world like the Forbidden City or Mount Everest that I know I will never go to and is a good simulation of those places. The actual games are not really complex which would put off hardcore gamers but for a casual like me it is fun to play for an hour or two. Plus as the other anon is hammering home the porn is next level. With cheaper alternatives than the Vive out there I think the market will grow and spiral out with more content which will grow the market more. The Google card board glasses with a phone is a dirt cheap way to experience the same thing and other options are out there to just use your cell phone as a screen. I know that I'm a rare customer in that I went whole hog on the best and spent a good chunk of money to upgrade my computer with the Vive as a primary focus but I needed a new computer anyways so it wasn't the only reason. Still the cheaper options will make the difference in viability.

My brother almost did the same thing. But he overshot his budget on his PC and before he could afford his Vive he decided to go to school.

It's here, now. The only problem is the cost is so high that developers don't see the point in making games and applications for it.

Eventually as the price comes down, more people will buy units. Thankfully, Steam is an excellent platform for independent developers get their titles out there and drum up interest in an otherwise niche market.
