Greetings /vip/!
1st time poster on this particular subject, mainly looking for any general tips on moving out on my own. I'm 20.
And yes, I've thought it through.
ANYTHING is appreciated.
Mainly looking for just any tips like food and budgeting. I have a decent budget for all my bills and savings going, but I'll keep my post short to have More options open.

What city do you plan on living in? Housing will depend on where you live. Bigger cities tend to cost more for housing than living in a rural area. Roommates always make things cheaper at the cost of having to deal with a roommate or roommates. I would suggest one though because three people living together tends to gravitate towards two people getting along and the third being an outsider. Also it makes it easier to get an apartment if you have a good credit score. If you have a really good credit score and enough money saved up you can buy a house and get roommates to pay you rent. Also the way the housing market is now, at least in America, a mortgage is sometimes cheaper per month than rent and you get to keep your money as equity in the house. Another thing about rural living that you can make things cheaper on you is you can buy land outright and then put a small house or a trailer on the land. It's not the classiest thing ever but it is much cheaper than buying a suburban house.

Try to budget for your monthly expenses like internet, subscriptions like Netflix and Hulu, and food with your rent. When buying food make sure to make a list with prices and keep a small amount within the budget for any impulse purchases while you're at the store. If the smell of that rotisserie chicken makes you hungry, or you're craving a twinkie when you look at the box you can pick them up guilt free if you plan on using $15 for impulse buys. If you don't use it then you saved money.

About $200 in the summer and $150 in the winter in the Atlanta area. I also live in a house with two also heavy computer users so we use more juice than most. Oh, another thing, to get around the data cap since I by myself use over a terabyte a month is to pay a little more for the business internet. If you tell them you work from home they won't care. Only economical if you heavily download, stream, or game.

Get a job with a company that offers a 401k; extra bonus if they match you dollar per dollar on your 401k.

Treat it as a blind savings account and never touch it because you may need it in the future. The future may be financial hardships or putting a down-payment on a house.

Get a credit card, make a few payments (within your means of course), let interest accrue on it a little then pay it off. By doing so it will increase your credit score you'll be set so long as you keep paying it (some cards require you to pay the whole amount when its due, others allow you to do a minimum payment and pay next again next month, use the latter).
