Sage began in 2012 as just an art "Create a Pokedex" thing, it only evolved into an actual fangame project later on. I joined in September of 2013 I believe, and some of the pokedex was still not finalized and only a very, very, very, very rough proof of concept demo existed. The very first 1.0 demo IIRC release in december.
So actual "production" of it as a game started in 2013.
