This looks like it could have been a DQ monster so I'm more inclined to believe it was a real beta sprite/concept they started with and went on to refine seeing as how much of Pokemon stemmed from DQ.

That's possible, but I don't buy Twinz being dark/normal as much as I do Girafarig.
There was at least one other instance of evolution lines being merged in the mola and shark/eel lines. I don't doubt something similar happened there. The lack of a frontsprite for baby Girafarig in any of the materials leaked leads me to believe that it was cut REALLY early in development, and its backsprite just lingered for that long.

iirc that was a lie too, the debug build was either a match for one of the builds in the recent debug build leak or a build compiled from the source code but I can’t remember which. They tried to claim that it was a build used for testing and the tester’s name was removed but the credits are actually a total match for what’s seen in all the other builds, so
