As for uniquely expansive ideas, Gen 5 is where multiplayer was streamlined. You had the C-Gear on the bottom of the screen, which allowed you to quickly connect locally. This feature, was later upgraded to allow online connectivity as well in every later game except Alola, which for some reason opted for what's essentially just a worse Join Avenue with the abity to connect online. At least it had that "Quick Connect" thing for local play.
Gen 5 also implemented the automatic Repel system, which essentially just made it more convenient, no longer having to go into your bag everytime a repel had to be used, it stopped existing when repels weren't needed, which was when overworld encounters became the norm.
Finally the way it calculated experience yields was carried on to most later games. Essentially it worked like this, if your level was higher than your opponent's, you'd gain less exp, while if you were lower level you'd gain more. XY, Let's Go and PLA are the only games to not implement it, or a modified version based on Exp Share.
