Until we meet another species that is equal to or superior to us in intellect, society, and culture, we are the top of the food chain and all other creatures are beneath us.
Does that mean you should go out of your way to kick puppies? No, as the dominant species we have a duty to be wise and kind with our power over the planet, and certainly it is a sign of mental illness that one would harm an animal for any purpose other than food, self-defense, or to protect the environment (that's what sport hunting is btw, you keep deer populations down to help maintain the balance of the environment), but humans ARE superior.
