Yeah, you can say pokemon is a rehash, but that's not really a bad thing. They found a formula that worked, and stuck with it, because the fans liked that formula. They'll build on it and add stuff, but at the end of the day, it's the same formula. When they want to try something a little different, they'll make a spinoff for it.
Digimon found their own formula that also worked, and fans liked it, but instead of keeping it, they abandoned it so they could try something new that, while fun in its own way, doesn't really have that same 'spark' the first game had. Re:Digitize actually tried to bring that spark back, which is why it succeeded.
