They aren't actually bad people so the smirk really ruins any ambiguity that that scene could have had since they just seem antagonistic, it could have been framed more equally so you aren't suspicious of Aether when you get there.
Likewise during the infiltration they're pretty much just doing what the lady who pays the bills is tilling them to do, because Lusamine also isn't evil, she's just suffering from monomania following the loss of Mohn and sees you as an obstacle.
