The second route of Kanto actually leads into the forest, and it's not just three steps and you're there. You, again, have a direction to walk other than forward.
All I'm saying is that the first routes to the games should be a bit more than a straight line. Make that first route in Kalos a part of the town, extend the second route a bit more so that it doesn't immediately lead into the forest.
