FR/LG has a level gap of 22, HG/SS has a level gap of 10. If you're solo running with your starter, then maybe that 22 level gap doesn't seem so bad, but in any other situation, it's not going to be so easy. Johto meanwhile kneecaps the levels on everything. Look at Morty's fucking level, he's the fourth Gym Leader and he's only four levels above Misty. After him it only gets worse, with Pryce being the most embarrassing "7th" Gym Leader in the history of the franchise.
