I've been playing since Gen 2, this year in 2016 I played Yellow for the first time ever and it blew my mind how difficult it was. I've been too used to the easy street of Gen 6, I literally had to do the 1st rival battle over 10 times. 7 of those were just trying to take out his Pidgey and there was plenty of grinding inbetween. Over 20 years of experience couldn't prepare me for Gen 1.
I've only just managed to beat Brock because I have Squirtle and I haven't played for a while because I'm scared it's going to get harder.
The idea that Pokemon's difficulty hasn't changed is bullshit and complete lies, it may have been easy for you from the beginning if you've always been good at RPGs, but I never found Gens 1-4 to be easy. 5 I noticed things got a bit hand-holdy and 6 was easy as hell. Even Masuda has admitted in interviews that the games have gotten easier.
