For me, this killed pokemon. I was autistic enough to buy their worsening products past gen 6 but I draw the line on this singular aspect(I realize there are many issues as bad if not worse). The point of the game is to pour effort into each pokemon and raise them as a team on the individual merits of each. Some level quickly while others are slower; some are more versatile while others are saved for niche stuff. In the incredibly unlikely event that my 5 pokemon are lower than level 30 before facing kabu, i have little sense of which ones earned their level and which ones are coasting. Typically the only way to counteract overleveling pokemon like togekiss(who can be on your team, not see battle once and stay even with your highest level mons) is to use exp candies on the others. Let me stress that leveling is entropic to the enjoyment of the game, meaning you're literally playing artificially when you use these candies and getting none of the prescribed reward for doing so.
Obviously players want to have access to their whole team in a trainer battle. It is impossible to do this while circumventing the exp share, meaning I have to watch as my game is played on autopilot for 4/6 mons on average per battle. The utter laziness of this mechanic and how it was implemented without amendments made to conflicting mechanics is enough to get me to drop this series. It was shitty enough to play gen 7 as the sidekick character; now I don't even get to be the game's player?
