If GMax was a final stage instead of a kaiju form the most logical sense the line would go is Applin -> Flapple -> GMax Flapple design. Appletun was literally created for plushies in mind, which is evident due to the lack of Flapple plush and the proliferation of appletun in plush form (just two really being the life size one and the giant one). Plus Flapple had the signature move Grav Apple which had a completely unique animation, unlike Apple Acid which is basically just throw up.
