I think it could work if Pokemon following you could be optional, AND you could chose which Pokemon follows you (like with Pokemon Amie) instead of it always being the first one in your party. And maybe limit what Pokemon can be chosen, i.e. large Pokemon like Onix, Tyranitar, Venusaur, Arcanine etc would be exempt from the feature altogether.
I like the idea of having certain Pokemon be "ride-able" rather than them following behind you, and the smaller Pokemon just ride around on the player's shoulder. This would probably be too much work for Gamefreak to actually implement it, though...
