They're not mutually intelligible (so yeah, if you ever wanted to know, Mandarin speakers can't understand Cantonese speakers and vice versa, but realistically virtually everyone who grew up in China under 40 also knows Mando, it's Kongers and diaspora like me who don't) and it's a consensus among linguists that they're separate languages
