Problem is if they are not relatable. The starter type is something most player use all throughout their game starting from shoulder mon to bro. They have character and expressive faces and they're not for niche tastes, they are more the kind of thing the average kid would like as a pet.
If you think that's bullshit, think of a more extreme contrast: a fire starter that's just a fucking bunch of lava rocks or a water starter that's just a faceless oyster or a grass starter that's an axe. Those are all possible pokemon concepts but never ever starter types.
