Twitter and western media have made it their life mission to attack Japan, loli, and to a lesser degree shota for years. I'm always reminded of that bbc news reporter in a doujin shop pointing out loli to everyone watching the news and the shop owner telling her there's nothing wrong with it when she brought it up to him. Shit like that most likely turbo boosted the problem, it's literally not hurting anyone.
Granted, those in to the anime/manga community are more likely to be accepting of it and not throw a fit even ones at anime-cons from my experience. Hell, in my life my close circle of friends I still do stuff with from school and a few that fit in to that same group from college are otaku, fujo, or just nerds. None of the group have problems with lolicon and five of them including two girls like it. Rather It be Pokemon or whatever series like what you like, fuck the haters and 'moral' fags.
