This isn't that big of a deal, since usually my starters tend to either go unused or die quickly (in the 28 games I played I lost 13 starters, which accounted for just under 10% of all my deaths)
There's also a lot of strategy as to which mons you should pop when, like Hypno which is great in Gen 1 but is much worse after the Special split
