it seems like gamefreak is trying to slow down the production so that "generations" don't seem overly rushed like they might have seemed in the past.
they might not seem the same structure-wise to previous generations, looks like this style we see in kalos/alola is how we're gonna see pokemon generations from here on out.
this too is reflected in the dex entries. we have less pokemon but a more detailed world. and thus, each generation is its own unique experience. kalos and alola are completely different experiences, and as such, are different generations.
tl:dr, sun/moon is gen 7. gen 8 and beyond will look similar structure-wise.
