I think he never ever truly wanted it, or anything in his life, before meeting the MC. Maybe I'm just self-projecting but he seems to be depressed at the start of Teal Mask. Shy, awkward, repressed. Had his Pokemon for a while but never bothered to train them, never wanted to become stronger. He didn't even want to go on the trip and he didn't want his own phone before he saw ours. This lack of goal or motivation, wanting to be left alone, it just speaks "depressed" to me.
