It was by no means a great show, maybe not even a good show, but it was a fun show made by people that earnestly cared about what they were making. Industry veterans putting real effort into it. Frankly it's rare to see media made by people that earnestly care these days (Christ look at the newest Pokemon games). It's one of the reasons it fucking exploded. There's a lot of parallels you can draw to Pokemon, too. Both present exotic and dangerous but also slightly idealized worlds to get lost in and theorycraft for. Both series are clearly made for children, but attract autistic men for some reason. Both shows have simple designs that are easy to replicate, so even if you're shit at drawing, your fanart won't necessarily look horrible. Both series saw their shows get worse over time. And of course, both series inspired boatloads of porn. Like, unreasonable amounts of porn.
