>>46249588Most game players don't watch the anime, and (mostly) each part of the series does its own thing. The games may have one or two past cameos but are their own stories. The anime may have the theme of going through a chronological order for the badges and use past captures of the region, but it can take over 100 episodes (roughly 2 years of weekly releases) to get through a region so you can pick it up from anywhere. The manga is divided by generations / regions and each does their own thing. There are spin-off games with no references to other media. Pokemon Play It! and Pokemon Typing Adventure exist (and are two completely separate things no one remembers). Essentially you just find parts of the franchise you like and don't like and shitpost about them.
Since you want to start with Gen 1 you can play through your choice of Red / Blue / Yellow from the GameBoy or play FireRed / LeafGreen from the GBA with improved graphics. Make sure to play a romhack that makes trade evolutions evolve in game instead so you can use Gengar, Golem, Machamp, or Alakazam. Stadium 1 was released during the GameBoy days and is great for battles and includes mini-games. FireRed and LeafGreen can also obtain pokemon up to Gen 3 and has in-game events for legendaries up to Gen 3.
If you're going to play through the generations:
>Yellow or FireRed / LeafGreen>Crystal or HeartGold / SoulSilver>Emerald or Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire>Platinum>Black or White>Black 2 or White 2>X or Y>Sun or Moon, or Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon>Sword or ShieldBefore starting a region look up romhacks that have complete dex wild encounters so you can catch everything in 1 version. If it's a later 3D game look up version exclusives before starting to play it. For Gen 3, ORAS is not a 1:1 remake like the previous gens had and includes Mega Evolution. For Sun/Moon, play the originals if you want the climatic battle to be a single player exclusive RPG boss or play Ultra if you want to fight a dragon.
