I think the water route I suggested could save a few minutes to players that do decide to backtrack for some reason, so there's that. And the lower part of the T even has a convenient loop around to the initial area.
This also might be a silly suggestion, but having the grey passage require surf to get through might act as an incentive to make players actually go back to the starting area. Plus it helps keep the map two separated "open" chunks, which might be neat. Having the two parts of the map be separated by water might be silly tho
