The original script had the movie be about the skeleton of a T-Rex coming back to life and attacking everyone. The movie would tackle questions like "What happened to the real animals?" and "Why are there still plants?" but they decided they didn't want that, and made it what it is now known as. Real animals were never mentioned again since then.
