not every route is a linear straight hallway. There's plenty of routes that have some sort of branching path

I don;t know about kalos or galar but alola has optional areas like haina desert and ten carat hill and even some places you can backtrack with ride pokemon to get TMs

If you're talking specifically about gen 7 it has routes were you can actually explore and optional areas like Haina desert, Kala'e bay, Blush mountain, and Hano beach. I don't know why people think gen 7 has no exploration

I think gen 7 gets too much criticism. Removal of PSS is something I won't defend (in fact I never played cart online so I can't speak for it anyways lol), but I'm playing Ultra Sun right now and I feel that the cutscenes aren't as bad as this board makes them out to be. Most of them are short, or maybe I just have a lot of patience. However I will admit that the fact that they aren't skippable is an objective flaw. The "no exploration" complaint is complete bogus. After beating Hala and getting ride tauros, there are optional areas on melemele like ten carat hill where you can find new pokemon and TMs and items. Also The game doesn't railroad you to the photo club tutorial. It gives you the freedom to check out the stuff that was originally blocked off by ride tauros before going to the photoclub. It's been a while since the last time I played US (I'm currently on second island), but if I'm not mistake the game gives you the freedom of choice to explore haina desert in between cutscenes or continue with the main game. Some handholding isn't really a problem such as NPCs giving you items because you can just sell these items and only use ones you find on your journey. I think some of the routes are pretty well designed

How is being able to fish in only certain spots a downgrade? With the exception of feebas every tile in every body of water in the older games has the exact same encounter rates. There is no point in having multiple tiles when they all have the same encounter rate

The game might be linear in terms of story progression but it doesn't lack exploration. It has optional areas Haina Desert, Hau'oli Cemetery, Kala'e Bay Blush Mountain and areas where you can backtrack using ride pokemon to get TMs or other items
