Alola and the current series didn't even hardline any badge quests either. Going back, Ash is no longer green on type advantages/disadvantages like before, since they can only hold on to that for so long. Early worldbuilding also had guns, real world references and non-Pokémon animals. Nowadays unless it fires lasers to use as tools or nets, you won't be seeing any other cannon or gun-like objects being used by humans.
The only non-changes are Ash and the Team Rocket trio which some fans don't care for but the series' formula has been subject to reconstruction a few times.
