The more I think about it, the more I realize how pointless it is how popular people in the Pokemon universe make Pokemon fighting.
It's well-established that Pokemon have use in everyday tasks, hard labor, and companionship. Think about all the potential this has: Fighting-type Pokemon could be used in martial arts schools, athletics training, and as police assistance (yeah, it makes more sense to have Arcanine what with "K-9" units and whatnot, but it has potential). Electric-type Pokemon could be used as sources of electricity, as assistance in circuitry, and for use in power plants. Water-type Pokemon could be used in firefighting, et cetera.
Now, I can understand the fighting aspect being a staple of the games, and in that realm of things, it works. Since the anime is more or less based off of the games, it works there, as well.
However, when you try to ground things in reality, it's downright impractical. Real life could be made so much more convenient and manageable with assistance from Pokemon, yet people decide to cockfight with them and make an empire out of it instead.
Why isn't there a Pokemon story that's just about the human characters where the Pokemon's role is more or less fluent to real life circumstances? I would read one of those, just to see how it handles things.
