When Game Freak added them my child mind assumed they would use it as an alternative version of crossgen evolutions that made the Pokémon much stronger without them being completely overpowered, exploitable or outclassed by eviolite like a few of the gen 4 crossgen evolutions, but not only did they mostly give them to Pokémon that didn't need them (starters, pseudos, other A-tier Pokémon, etc.), but the ones that needed mega evolutions that really needed them got completely outclassed by at least one or two. Not only that, but the one-per-team rule often made them a liability that ought to pull its weight more than it did, making me and many others almost hate those megas more than anything. Don't even get me started on Mega Genghis, that was clearly an attempt to try something unique that turned miserable for anyone playing against it.
God, I wish Mega Banette was better
especially in GO. Maybe they'll try to make more one day...
