The people who made Pokemon
Interview with the developer team of pokemon
The people who created the world where 150 pokemon live in.
Will have a leisure talk with the people now beinf reliefed from a long development time.
What changed during the long development time.
-This game had a long development history, please tells us how you feel after finishing it.
Tajiri:I had made plans for this game ever since I established Game Freak, from then it took 6 years to finalize. Obviously, thanks to the fact we worked on other games we also had periods where we took a break from “Pocket Monsters” development. Techinically it was the first year and the last 3 years of the entire development time so you could say it was only 4 years (laughs).
-The current staff gathered here came here during those 4 years?
Tajiri:No, during that time, people came and went. The ones who were from beginning to end were me, Masuda and Sugimori only. Later staff steadly added up to support us. In the end we ended up amount around 20 people so I think it eventually became a big project.
-While that development cycle was long, were there any good anecdotes?
Morimoto:We were able to spend a lot of time on it, which meant that we were able to work on every detail as many times as we wanted. The schedule started similar to a normal game but in the case of “Pocket Monsters” we had an undetermined timeline which allowed us to include every idea we could.
Sugimori:Working for 6 years means we had drawings from 6 years ago. From the point of view of the character designer, its kind of a shame to look at those drawings from 6 years ago. I improved so its a complex feeling. Its a nostalgic feeling of “so I drew something like this”.
