The variations cannot be confused for a different species of Pokémon, unlike the Tyrogue one (the Jynx, Loppunny and Magmar ones are especially bad in this regard) and they offer a different flavor/take on the original. It's not particularly good, because I think variations should be more subtle and this one ain't so, but the concepts are nice.
