Simple: good old trial and error. RBY weren't that hard but the one roadblock that comes from not knowing english is entering Saffron City because there's a hint about the guards being thirsty and literally the ONLY way i found out about this was me randomly buying and keeping the drink items, i then told my brothers and then they told whoever that got filtered by that.
Which is funny in retrospective because i fondly remember how we could beat every gym but not Sabrina because we could not bypass the guards and tried to speak to every, single, available NPC
